AMELIE RIVES
Now the Princess Troubetskoy

that has ever appeared between covers. Don’t wait to

The Sky Scrapers.
In this present time of architect
ural skill which appears in the
structure of the magnificent build
ings to be seen in our great cities,
some of them eighteen and twenty
or more stories high. Now, we
think of a two story house as a tall
j building, but just think of nine or
j ten of our two story houses one
right on top of another, and we get
some idea of how tall such build
ings are, and see some reason why
they are called “sky scrapers.” But
tall as they are, they were first laid
deep in the ground, upon a firm and
solid foundation, and then built one
story at a time, one story upon
another till all were done, and the
top story as steady and secure as
any, all being fitted and keyed to
gether by the strong steel bars that
hold them securely from the solid
and strong foundation, to the
finish on the top. Now all of these
stories or departments are for special
purposes, and the great commercial
and other interests of our country
furnish need for all the apartments
in all of these buildings, and all of
them are built for specific purposes.
The business of the first floor may
be complete in itself, but that does
not hinder the operation of that
upon the second floor and so on, or
perhaps all of the floors may be
connected in the carrying on of
some one great enterprise so that
all the building from foundation to
cap stone, forms one harmonious
union, each floor and apartment
contributing to the success of the
whole.
Now we have used this "sky
scraper” building as an illustration
of another building, a spiritual
building which every one of us
ought to be interested in, and wliile
only very few can build and own
the wonderful material buildings
that we have mentioned, every one
can, and may be the architect and
builder of the far nobler, and ever
enduring structure of a beautiful
Christian character, the material of
which we find mentioned in our
text II Pet. 1:5-7, “Faith, Virtue,
Knowledge, Temperance, Patience,
Godliness, Brotherly Kiqdnesp and
Love." Then let us call this our
“sky scraper,” or eight story build
ing, and let's see how it is built and
how the stories are added, and here
they follow:
I. Faith, then add to your faith,
virtue, and to virtue, knowledge,
and to knowledge, temperance, and
to temperance, patience, and to pa
tience, Godliness, and to Godliness,
brotherly kindness, and to brotherly
kindness, charity, which is love. See
first that our foundation is faith,
and for us to try to build up a good
Christian character without faith in
Jesus, would be like the foolish man,
who built his house upon the sand;
"for without faith it is impossible to
please God," but with faith as a
foundation, we may build with per
fect confidence, knowing that our
building will withstand ( all the
storms of adversity. Then on faith
we may build the next, II Virtue,
which is purity of life, conduct free
from any base or immoral behavior,
and right on this another story, III
Knowledge, for when life is being
purified then we become wise, “the
fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom,” then see with this begin
ning how natural the progress, IV
Temperance, this story just fits to
that of knowledge. So our building
is now four stories high and very
strong, well able to support another
story beautiful and bright, V Pa
tience, gentle, meek, yet powerful in
its strength to endure—then VI
Godliness, yes this means to be like
God, God likeness, these virtues all
blend into the beautiful building of
Christian character, and form a
strong support for the next story,
which is VII Brotherly kindnesss.
This seventh story being supported
by the six underneath, adds a de
lightful reception room where all
the weary ones may rest from the
toil and adversities of life, and feel
a warm welcome to the comforts
offered in a building of such perfect
arrangement; but passing up through
the seven stories where much is be
ing done to complete this most ex
cellent structure, we come to the
topmost story, the store house of
VIII Love, charity, true love. What
a beautiful finish the eighth story 0-
this building of spiritual architectf
ure, founded upon Faith and com
pleted or crowned with Love, Jesus
himself in the Christian life, being
the chief corner stone, the author
and finisher of our faith, and his
own presence and grace being the
strong Jiolds that keep every part
secure, and elevate the topmost
story of love to a sweet commun
ion with himself in glory—a fore
taste of heavenly joys—the Chris
tian’s earthly “sky scraper.”
