HAIRY VETCH FOR SOIL IMPROVE
MENT.
Would you give four dollars to have
six to eight loads of good stable ma
nure put on your land? Would you con
sider it worth four dollars to have as
much nitrogen added to your land ns
could bo added by an application of
-100 pounds of nitrate of soda per acre?
An acre seeded in hairy vetch and the
vetch turned under next spring, before
corn planting time, will add as much
vegetable matter to your land as six to
eight loads of stable manure and it will
take as milch nitrogen from the air,
and store it in the soil, as yon would
obtain from an application of 400
pounds of nitrate of soda.
Instances of where hairy vetch turned

CONCERNING HATCHERIES.
Ill the Farm Bureau column last week
wo stated that we are assured of a to
tal hutching capacity of forty thousand
eggs in Carroll county. This will in
deed mean much to our already well es
tablished poultry industry. These
plnats should not only give us cheaper
chicks than they have in the past but
should give us stronger and better
chicks.
Many chicks etime dead in shipping
boxes into tlio county last spring and of
course many came in a weakened and
diseased condition. Hnviug our own
hatcheries we can have onr own eggs
hatched or have them hatched from
our jieighlior’s stock which we know
to bo first-class in breeding. Then we
will not only know that we are getting
pure chicks but will know their origin,
strain, etc., and will know .that they
have not become chilled or Overheated
in shipping.
Where custom hatching is done (us
CREAMERIES AND
DAIRY COWS
will possibly bo the policy of the two
plants) it. is the usual policy to hatch
the eggs at a certain fixed price per
egg regardless of the number of chicks
hatched. This is a wise policy for botli
parties. The hatchery management can
not afford to experiment with eggs to
determine that they are fertile and
strong. The customer should know
that they (ire fertile and strong, other
wise he should not take them to the
hatchery us the hatchery man has no
way of telling how fresh and fertile
they are.
It is u good policy for tlio customer
in that he gets paid for tho care lio
likes of his eggs and if ho does not take
care of them lie alone is the loser.
This makes thp price of the chick come
cheaper to the careful producer and
higher to Hie cureless producer, and
this is us it should ho.
Another mutter which may stive some
disappointment to the customer is the
matter of tho per centngo of the hatch.
When you place 100 eggs with the
hatchery do not expect to get 100
chicks at the end of throe w.eeks, as
this would lie 100 per cent and is prne
t icully impossible. Where eggs are
well eared for it is reasonable to ‘expect
65 to 75 chicks from 100 eggs delivered
to tlio hatchery, though the percentages
may fall below this anil be no fault of
tlio machine.—O. it. Ingram, County
Agent.
SELECTION OF SEED FOR ANOTH
ER YEAR.
Early in the spring T was talking
with a certain well known gentleman
about improving our common stock of
poultry in Carroll county. Tlio discus
sion was carried on at some length
when he 'ended his part of the argu
ment by stating that “A chicken is a
chicken.” The same argument would
apply to cotton or corn and I suppose
that the same man would have said
that cotton is cotton and corn is corn.
I ngreo with tlieso statements so far
as they go but they do not tell tlio
whole story. A chicken is ft chicken
but it mny he n scrub chicken. Cotton
is cotton, hut it may ho scrub cotton,
and corn is corn but. it may ho scrub
corn, and so on.
Now with the best of our cotton or
corn we often hear it stated that our
•cotton or our corn has run out. We
have all notcied that there arc barren
stalks of corn or cotton in our fields
and of course tho cotton blooms and the
corn always grows a tassel. The pollen
from these two flowering parts goes to
tho other cotton plants or corn plants,
ns tho case may bo, giving this barren
quality to' tho seed on the other plants,
thus spreading the barren character to
ft number of plants. The result of this
wo call running out.
So the only ways in which wo can
keep good seed is to select the highest
yielding stalks and harvest these overy
Some time ago there was much talk
in Winder about a creamery. The
trouble is that wo talked more about
the creamery than we did about the
dairy cow. We can build quickly when
our farmers begjn to milk cows. The
Moultrie Observer, in discussing this
question, says:
‘‘It is not more creameries that we
need, but. more men who ure willing to
feed and milk tho dairy cows for a
living. There is a crenmory in Moul
trie that wns started just ten years ago.
This creamery could have handled all
the cream that has been produced In
tho state since that time. It lias been
so difficult, to got cream produced that
Hip creamery lias passed through three
or four failures, and only recently sCcms
to bo an a firm footing. After a com
munity lias developed enough dairying
o support a creamery, one cun lie stnrt
<1 almost over night..
‘‘It inis been so with packing houses.
There was for a time an impression that
packing houses could he put tip and
hogs would eomp to them just like sun
shine. It has been found much easier
to get a packing house that it lias boon
to got hog production.”
When we can get the farmers of
Harrow to realize that tho cow, tho ling
and the lion are their freedom from
financial bondage, we will have cream
eries and other enterprises that will
make markets for our products.”---Tho

The month of September is the month
to locute tho stalks of corn in the field
which arc the highest yielders under
avorage conditions. These should be
marked so as to bo able to locate and
harvest thegi separately later.
September is also the month for loca
ting and marking tho highest yielding
stalk of cotton nnd of course it would
bo necessary to harvest enough to have
u bale' to gin separately.
A little timo and effort here will mean
much hotter yields of the crops from
seeds so selected, but only for the more
wise ones who will follow the practice.
Will you be wise enoilgh to do this

ALPHABET PUZZLES
_
New and attractive features to please the children and gain
the interest of parents. Below is shown the first of this new
series of juvenile features—something for a “children’s cor
ner.”
These features will entertain and stir the inquiring faculties
of the child. Mother will also become interested.
“Alphabet Puzzles” are a variation and an improvement
on the hidden picture puzzle. They are confined to 27 sub
jects, each carrying a rhyme and an illustration attractive to
the eye. Each illustration contains hidden pictures. They
teach the alphabet, create an elemental idea of poetry and
awaken the imagination of the child. Finding the hidden pic
tures furnishes an agreebale manner of entertainment, whiles
exercising the child’s observation and developing its idea of
form. Instructions in small type accompanying each illustra
tion show the parent or instructor which way the picture is to
be turned in order that the child may puzzle opt the concealed
faces.
These puzzles form an exceptionally good scrapbook fea
tured-something to be cut out and preserved.
They are especially commendable for the attractive, cheer
ful drawings, each filled with the spirit of childhood. They
are the work of Violet Moore Higgins, an artist who has spe
cialized very successfully in this class of illustrating. The lit
tle ones will take great joy in the pictures and rhymes and in
working out the puzzles.

Flush the kidneys occasionally to re

removing acids, waste and poison, else
you may feel a dull misery in the kid

sediment, the channels often get irri

To help neutralize these irritating
acids and flush off the body’s urinot»s
waste, begin drinking water. Also get
about four ounces of Jad Salts from
any pharmacy, take a tablespoon fill in
a glass of water Ire fore breakfast for
a few days and your kidneys may then
act fine and bladder disorders disappear.
This famous salts is made from the
acid of grapes an.d lemon juice, com
bined with lithia, and has been used
for years to help clean and stimulate
sluggish kidneys and stop bladder irri

makes a delightful effervescent litliia-

By all means, drink lots of good water
every day. Have your physician exam
