NOW IS TIME TO PREPARE
FOR PLANTING GRAPES
THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE S UPPORTING LOCAL INTERESTS
The cool weather, whieh we have re
cently experienced in the southeastern
states, has been ideal for conditioning
grape plants for setting out during the
months of December and January.
Grapes should, by all moans, be plant
ed as oarly as possible in the soason for
the reason that they will have better
root systems devolopod by spring than
if planted later. Tho vines are now
becoming dormant at a very fast rate.
I We may begin the planting of grapes
j at any time after the 20th of Novem-
' ber throughout the State of Georgia.
^ For those who have roeognized the com
mercial possibilities of grapos and are
contemplating planting acreages the
coming season, it would be wise to be
gin a thorough preparation of tho soil.
The land should bo broken at loast 12
to 18 inches deop and thoroughly pul
verized. By all moans plant yonr grapes
on well drained land. Tho typo of soil
does not mako any noticoablo differ
ence, as varieties may be seleetod whieh
will harmonize with yonr conditions.
We wish to lay particular stress upon
the Importance of planting only healthy,
strong, vigorous one-year plants scien
tifically grown. It will be roeognlzed
that your future suecess in the grape
business absolutely depends:
First. Upon selecting varieties whieh
are known to bo true to name.
Second. Planting only varieties
which nro peculiarly adapted to the
different types of soils.
The plants, on coming from tho nur
sery, should bo cut bnck to two eyes
Tho root system should bo cut back to
about tho avorago of Bix inchos in or
der to balance tho growth of tho plant.
This should be dono properly at the
nursery boforo tho plants aro packod for
shipment. Upon, tho arrival of tho
plants they should bo unpacked at once,
heeled out in good moist soil but not
wot. In sotting in tho vineyard thoy
should bo sot as near the depth they
stood in the nursery as possible, which
can be determined by the ring showing
on the plant.
Plants pnt out early in the soason
during tho months of November, De
cember and January, if properly sot by
having soil prossod firmly around the
roots, loaving Borne loose soil around
the top, will grow off better without
water unless ground is unusually dry,
than plants put out later with water
AfteT tho grape plants have been sot,
keep up thorough cultivation by nse of
a spring tooth harrow or tool of tho
Acme typo. When shoots first begin to
appear, which will bo in onrly spring,
take a one-horso orange turning-plow,
bnrT off lightly about- two to three
inchos doop and nbout twelve inchos
from the plant. After doing this, np
ply to each plant from ono-half to one
pound of slow-acting fertilizer such as
castor pomieo or bono meal. This will
produco good, strong, healthy shoots.
Ffom then on give thorough eloan cul
tivation, keeping dust mulch through
out tho dry season.
WORLD FLIGHT ~~
MAPPED OUT
The aviation idoa is just in its in
fancy. A world trip by Army aviators
has been mapped out. Army air pilots
will mako tho around-the-world flight
next March, in four big air machines.
The flight is expected by air service of
ficials to demonstrate the feasibility of
present typo aircraft in tho various cli
mates of the world. Washington will
be the starting point for the flight
which will be made by four officers
and four enlisted men. Supplies will
bo shipped from tho United States to
various points along the route in ad
vance of the flight. The longest non
stop flight will bo about 700 miles. At
the present rate of flvo miles a minute
there is reallv no excuse for a man be
ing lato to dinner or to fill an engage
ment.

OUR
COMMON SENSE
To see, to hear, to taste, to tou ch and to smell are the five human
senses, and we, who have the good fortune of possessing them should
develop a sixth, COMMON SENSE, and thereby, support our local 1
interests. This does not apply to the wage earner alone, but it also
applies to the merchants engaged in one line of business, who go out
of our home town to do their buyiing in other lines.
MORAL:—The man of sense will circulate his money for the
betterment of local interests.
