Church Dinner
Honors Mr. Aderholt
The Fellowship Dinner held at
the First Baptist Church last Wed
nesday evening was in honor of re
tiring Sunday School Superintend
ent H. E. Aderholt, who has been
the main office of the Sunday
School for many years. Under his
leadership a fine morale has always
obtained and substantial progress
has been made. Declining further to
serve in this capacity, the church
membership gathered at the infor
mal dinner to pay him the sincere
tribute of appreciation and affection.
The devotion and faithfulness o|
Mr. Aderholt as superintendent and
churchman were dwelt upon in talks
made by Dr. M. H. Massey and H. L.
Garrison. Miss Mabeth Storey pre
sented a gift from the officers of the
Sunday School and Mr. Aderholt
responded in terms of gratitude for
the gift and the appreciation ex
pressed.
Southworth F. Bryan, the newly
installed Superintendent of the
Bible School, spoke of plans for fur
ther enlargement and progress of
the Church’s Bible teaching depart
ment. A delicious dinner was served
under the auspices of the Church’s
Hospitality Committee, consisting of
Mrs. C. B. Lord, Chairman; Mrs. C.
E. Hardy, Mrs. Claud Catlett, Mrs.
M. H. Massey, A. M. Hardy, E. L.

dle Roll.. Associated with these
general and departmental officers
are a large number of devoted and
capable assistants and teachers.
These were all installed in their re
spective places Sunday, September
25th.

The Fall Communion Service will
be held at Thyatira Church at 11:00
o’clock next Sunday morning. Rev.
C. P. Phillips, Home Missions Su
perintendent of Athens Presbytery,
will be present to administer the
sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. It
is hoped that all the members of
the church will be present to par
ticipate in this observance.
The Sunday morning service will
also mark the dedication and first
use of the new individual cup com
munion service. This service was
recently donated by Mr. C. H. Bar
nett, of West Palm Beach, Florida,
in memory of his mother, Mrs. W.
G. Barnett. The officers and mem
bers of the Thyatira Church are
deeply grateful for this thoughtful
gift.

The Board of Stewards, meeting
last Tuesday evening, heartily and
unanimously endorsed the recent
proposal of the Wesleyan Service
Guild to enlarge the church kitchen.
The Board authorized Mr. W. T.
Bryan and Rev. Lamar Watkins to
extend its appreciation to the Guild
and to the trustees of church prop
erty for their interest in the im
provement of the Church.

NEWS
HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
Plans are being made for a Hallo
ween Carnival to be held in the
Jefferson High School building on
Thursday evening, October 27.
Amusement will be provided for old
and young. Among the projects
sponsored will be a barbecue sup
per, an entertaining program, a
cake-walk, bingo and many other
attractions.
A high school girl will be chosen
Queen of the Carnival. At present
the standing of the contestants is as
follows:

10th grade, Yvonne Williamson —
5,760 votes.
11th grade, Martha Pern Fite

The contest will close on October
27, at 9:30 p. m.
This year part of the proceeds will
be used to help in the purchasing of
some of the larger instruments need
ed by the band. Come, have an
evening of fun, and help with this
project.
ESSAY CONTEST
The Jefferson Chapter U. D. C.
sponsors an essay contest each year
in the spring. Last year, the subject
was John B. Gordon. A large num
ber of girls and boys from our
school participated, and prizes were
given to the winners. The winning
essays were then sent to the state
headquarters.
The District Essay Chairman has
sent the following notice to the local
U. D. C. president: “I wish to inform
you that Roberta Crumley, 124 Oak
St., has been declared to have the
second best essay from 6th grade in
the State. She will receive a certifi
cate soon. It is an honor to have
second place with the large number
of essays sent in. It was a lovely
essay.”
It is with great pride that Jeffer
son school news can contribute this
information. Roberta is to be con
gratulated upon winning this honor.
It is hoped that this may be an in
centive to our pupils to send many
good essays next Spring.
LIBRARY
The Woman's Club has made a
I donation of $25 00 to the library.
This will be used for the immediate
purchase of books that are in de
mand. This is one of many gener
ous gestures on the part of the Wo
man’s Club, and is greatly appreci
ated.
F. H. A. NEWS
Sixteen Future Homemakers from
the local chapter attended the dis
trict meeting in Gainesville, Satur
day, October Bth. An interesting
program was planned by the district
officers. The chapter received
many good ideas on how to improve
our program of work.
The regular monthly meeting of
the local F. H. A. was held Tuesday,
October 11th. 18 new members were
initiated according to official cere
mony. Bobby Jean Dodd, Grace
Porter, Shirley Ruth Morgan, and
Carolyn Weir were chosen song
leaders for the year.
All members are working to make
this year the best F. H. A. year at
Jefferson.
7TH GRADE NEWS
The memory work for the 7th
grade for October includes the 2srd
Psalm, part of the 14th chapter of
John, and “L Envoi” by Rudyard
Kipling.
The 7th Grade has been enjoying
poems from “A Treasury of the
Familiar.” Among some particu
larly liked were: ‘The High Way
man,” “Cremation of Sam McGill,”
“Young Loehinvar,” ’’Crossing the
Bar,” and “Curfew Must Not Ring
Tonight.”
One period of this week was de
voted to the reading of a favorite
poem by each member.
SIXTH GRADE
The boys and girls of the 6th
grade have been studying about
I Greece in Geography and History.
They made Doric columns, Pharos
Lighthouse, some scenes of the
mountains, seaports and Corinth
Canal with clay and white mud. Al
so, many maps showing the rivers,
mountains and cities and made post
ers telling about them.
Stories from Greece by our Eng
lish teacher, Mrs. Aderholt, have
been enjoyed.

NEWS FOR THE BOYS
The Cub Scouts will meet at the
dens every Thursday at 3:30 p. m.
The R. A.’s will meet on Wednes
day at the Baptist Church at 3:30
p. m. These clubs are very good.
Most of our school boys from ages
9 to 11 attend.

DRAGONS DEFEATED BY
ELLIJAY
The undefeated Ellijay team came
through with another victory last
Friday night to roll over Jefferson
35-0. Though the Jefferson Dra
gons were defeated they put up a
good defensive game in spite of the
mhny pounds they were outweighed
by Ellijay.
The Gilmer County High School
has an enrollment of about 1300.
This large enrollment gives them a
great percentage from which to
pick their players. Only one team
has yet to score on this mighty
team Hartwell scored 7 points in
their game with the Ellijay team to
the second lowest points scored in
any of their games for this season.
