What icc are Made of.— The following
is from an article by Oliver W. Holme*:
If the reader of thia paper live another
year, hi* self conscious principle will have
migrated from hi* present tenement to
another, the raw material* even of which
are not yet put together. A portion of
that body of which is to be, will ripen in
the corn of his next harvest. Another
portion of his future person lie will pur
chase, or others will purchase for him,
headed up in the form of certain barrels
of potatoes. A third fraction is yet to be
gathered in the southern rice field. The
Hmhs with which he is then to walk will
bo glad with flesh borrowed from the ten
ants of many stalls and pastures, now
unconscious of their doom. The very or
gans of speech with which he is to talk so
wisely, plead so eloquently, orspeak effec
tively, must first serve his humble brctli
etn to bellow, and for all the varied utter-
ance of bristled or feathered barnyard life.
Hi*bones themselves are, toagreal extent,
in posse and not esse. A bag of phosphate
of lime, which he lias ordered from Prof.
Mapes, for his grounds, contains a large
part of what is to be his skeleton. And
more than all this, and by far the greater
part of liis body, is nothing at all but water
the main substance of his scattered mem
bers is to be looked for in the reservoir, in
the running streams at the bottom of the
well, in the clouds that float over his head
or diffused among them all.
EF*“The late Chief Justice Marshall,
while riding one morning to court in his
single carriage, his horse fell down and
broke a shah. He was puzzled what to
do. Tom, a neighboring negro wagoner,
happening to drive up, lie asked him if he
could help him out of his difficulty.
•Oyes, maßsa, if you’ll lend me your
knife”?’
Tom took the knife and cut a sapling
pole and a grape vine from a neighboring
thicket, with which lie speedily spliced up
the broken shaft.
‘Now, Tom,’ said the Judge, ‘why
didn’t I think of that V
‘O, massa, replied Tom, ‘you know dal
tome people will hab more sense den
oders /’’
Triumph over Evil. —We are rewarded
for every triumph we make over tempta
tion. I will suppose there are many who
have struggled against the vanity of vain’
pleasures; many who have put down evil
thoughts with a strong will; many who,
after a long, and, it may be, an uncertain
conflict with tho seductions of the world,
at length have triumphed. I will put it
to them whether when they have combat
ed and prevailed against evil, their hearts
have not softened and melted, and they
have not felt within their bosoms a seraph
ic ? They have so felt; and so it will
over be. No sooner shall they have driven
from them the tempting demon of pride, of
vanity, of anger,—no sooner shall the de
vil have left them, than angels will come
and minister unto them.
Idleness. —Carlyle says: —Nine-tents of
the miseries and vices of manhood pro
ceed from idleness; with men of quick
minds, to whom it is especially pernicious,
this habit is commonly the fruit of many
disappointments and schemes oft baffled ;
and men fail in their schemes, not so much
for the want of strength as from the ill-di
roction of it. The weakest living crea
ture, by concentrating his powers upon a
single object, can accomplish something;
the strongest, by dispersing his over many,
may fail to accomplish anything. The
drop, by continued falling, bores its pass
age throngh the hardest rock—the hasty
torrent rushes over it with hideous uproar,
and leaves no trace behind.
The Force of Habit. —There was a boy
in my class—says Sir Walter Scott—who
stood at the top, nor could, I with all my’
efforts supplant him. Day came after day,
and still he kept his place, do what I
would, till at length I observed that when
a question was asked, lie always fumbled
with his finger at a particular button in
the lower part of his waistcoat. To re
move it, therefore, became expedient in
my eyes, and in an evil moment it was re
moved with a kuife. Great was my anx
iety to know the sncccss of measure, and
it succeeded 100 well. When the boy was
•gain questioned, his fingers sought the
button, but it was not to be found ; in his
distress he looked down for it; it was to
bo seen no more than to be felt. lie stood
confounded, and i took possession of his
flace; nor did he ever recover it, nor ever,
believe, suspect who was the nut hoi of
his wrong. Often, in after life, has the
sight of him mots me hr I passed by him,
and often have I resolved to make him
some, reparation, but it ended in good res
olutions.—Lockharts Life of Scott.
