Belief Xketixg in Spalding.—ln our
paper to-day WJI be seen the proceedings of
the Relief Meeting that was held in Griffin
on last Satur lay. We were not present j
and, therefore, accept no part of the honors
there won in carrying through or sustaining
any relief policies suggested on that oeva
sion. We will say one thing, however, —the
c nqtteror may take advantage ov our in
stincts, and fund us to it/ />•! rent repudiation;
hut voluntary, cold-blood, deliberate repudt
ation of a just debt-hard as it nay le to
jay it, or even impossible-—str kes us as n
enormity which, it seems, no ordinary o ex
traordinary combination of 'inum.-t .nc 8
'can extet u ite, much less justify.
Relief, however, is needed, and the people
uNist have it ; but it can he obtained far
short of any compromise of honor or hon Ss
ty, or any tiling that even looks like it.
“Where there is an honest will, there is an
honest way.”
Relief Meeting iti Spalding
Pursuant to » previous cad. a respectable
portion ofthe people of Spalding county,
met in the court house in GrilHit, on Satur
day, Oct. (Ith, ISOC, when, on motion, Titos.
H. Johnson, Esq., was called to the Chair,
and A. G. Murray requested to act as Secre
tary.
()u motion, a committee of otic from ton h
district, was appointed to prepare matter for
rhe consideration of the meeting, to wit ;
A. I*. Nuiiiially, John 1. Moore, il. J. Mau
|. y, David A. 'i’hotuas, James F. Dupree
Fu.toit H.Diewry, William Crittenden, W.
Jordan, and, on motion, the editors ol the
Stur and .1 insrti itn l ttttm wcreadtled to the
cotimrittce.
Alter a short absence, the committee re
ported the following:
Wuekeas, In view ol'the devastating war
which has swept over our country for four
long years, laving waste most of our del is
and consuming our provisions, crippling
our resources, and with the emancipation of
negro slavery exhausting every meatus by
which the good citizens of the 81 tie Could
pay their debts, we believe that justice and
equity require that some plan should he nra
lured by the Legislature, and carried into
effect, by which the mass es cmr people
could be relieved from their prerent condi
tion. It is a well known fact that most of
fits debts-contracted previous to and during
the war, that both creditor and debtor pre
dicated their payment on the propeity of the
coon try and the labor of negro slavery, these
prospects having been blasted, and the
means tor paying taken away : tliei efore, the
people are despondent of ever being able to
pay their debts, and are conscious of the
Pact that it will require every exertion and
all the energy in the r power to make a
competent living for their families for years
to come, and most especially after stroll a
drouth as we have had throughout the State,
and meet the exorbitant taxes levied upon
ns, both by tae Federal and State [govern
ments, we have no idea that the present cut
ton crop will pay the taxes and supply the
deficiencies in the corn crop Iu view of
all these facts staring us in the face, we are
inevitably Compelled to appeal to the Leg
fslature of the Stale for some measure o
relief; thei chore.
Resolved. That we appeal to the Legisla
ture of the State to pass some measure for
relief, »6,in their judgment may seem best,
whether by a day law, a libetal homestead
'hw, exemption law, a repeal of collection
itiws, bankrupt law,.or repudiation if neces
sary and constitutional.
Resolved, That we cannot see why it would
not be just «s constitutional to relieve the
people trom their indebted ness;-as it was to
pass a law repudiating all tue indebtedness
el die State to the people, and repudiating
the coutracts for slaves between individuals,
thereby impairing the contracts men made
for slaves, as well,as their own contracts to
pay.
—Resolved, That we believe that the persons
who are able to pay their debts, should do
and we think ail persons should pay in
proportion to their wort It now and at the
time the debts were made.
Resolved, that our members be especially
ttitlructed to pass a liberal h uiestead law.
On a motion l ■ strike out the latter e ause
"t the first resolution relating to repudia
t oiq.scuml speeches Were made and on a
j'viMon,e motion was lost by two majority.
