George Gould was asked th* other
day What the government might ex
pect of him in the event of war. Hie
reply Is reported to have been : “The
government may have my yacht, the
Atalanta, and anything else I have
got that it wants. If the government
needs money, the men of New York
who have money will furnish it with
all it wants”
The New York Press is authority
for the statement that Alfred Henry
Lewis, the present pet of Hearst, re
ceives |3OO per week for his services
to the New York Journal. The Press
further ssys, quoting Mr. Lewie as its
authority, that Mr. Hearst is spending
more than $6,000,000 a year on his pa
per. Evidently there is big money in
“yellow journalism” tor somebody.
A Spaniard io the United States
would probably be left unmolested if
he behaved himself, kept his mouth
shut and attended strictly, to his per
sonal affaire. An American in Cuba
or Spain, in case war should break
out, would be wise to get out of (be
country at the earliest possible mo
ment and not wait to settle up his af
fairs, and the lighter his baggage, the
better chance ol getting away in safe
ty.—Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
Some of the patriotic vessel owners
ol the north have no scruples about
squeesing tbe government for the last
eent possible in selling their craft for
the national defenses. The steam pi
lot boat at Philadelphia, which cost
$65,000 more than a year ago, is held
at SIOO,OOO oasb, or more than 60 per
cent, profit. In New York on Thurs
day the government declined to pur
chase several American . steamships
which were wanted for the auxiliary
fleet because their owners demanded
exorbitant prices for them. A great
many of the patriots are no doubt
keeping a weather eye to tbe main
chance, while they are shouting for
tbe old flag.
