fiIORGU’B QUOTAIB BEING BAP
IDLY MOBILIZED.
fteMen Ara Getting Down to Hard
Work. But Still Find Time For
Some Fan.
C«mp Nortbeo is now one mass of
Hfing being ■, ready to go to the front
io the line of battle. A finer and
healthier lot of men was never congre
gated io one body before.
1 During yeeterday the Browne Fen
ciblee. of Columbus, and the Macon
Volunteer* arrived and were at once
quartered.
With these companies there is a to
i tsl of sixteen hundred men in camp,
? excepting the Fifth regiment band
which arrived yesterday morning with
25 men.
- Governor Atkinson was a guest of
the camp yesterday and to a Call cor
respondent he expressed his delight
With affairs throughout the camp.
The governor was asked his opinion
regarding the physical examination of
ffi en before being brought to the ren
dezvous and replied: .
“I think it decidedly best to exam'
ins men at their respective homes.
This saves a great expense to the gov
ernment and a still greater embar
rassment to the men who have bid
thsir family and friend* farewell.
‘ln South Carolina 417 men were
M nt to the camp in one body. Ont of
that number 310 passed and 107 were
rejected, thereby causing an expendi
ture of several hundred dol'ars to the
government, and losing many posi
tions for the men ”
Last night three companies arrived.
Three were from Borne, Augusta and
Atlanta, with a total of 231 men.
Major Taylor, United Slates army
surgeon, spent yesterday in examining
the m«n. .All men, with a very small
exception, have gone through with a
rigid physical teat, and none were Ex
amined yesterday unless appearances
Wgeried doubt as to fitness
The men passed most of the day
yesterday in drilling by squads,
. gleaning up the streets and some few
in playing ball and other games of
MMiaement.
But the camp is a place of duty and
very few find time to frolic.
One passing down the line of tents
will hear all kinds of remarks regard
ing their quarters. One said he bad
ths nightmare and ate the hay in his
hnt. Borne claim they would be hap
py if they had something to eat.
Ridiculous placards posted upon
the tents is no Uncommon sight, and
famish amusement to officers and
■Km.
' It is not known exactly when the
mastering of troops will begin, as tbe
examination may take some days yet
and the arrival of troops will also be a
drawback to this.

A dispatch from Shanghai says that
it is reported there that Admiral Mon
tejo, tbe commander of the Spanish
fleet, who escaped from Cavite by
running along tbe shore- to Manila
with his two sons, was killed by tbe
populace of the latter place.
It is added that tbe hospital of San
Roque, filled with Spanish soldiers,
was set on fire by shells from the Bos
ton and that Sisters of Charity were
killed while removing tbe wounded.
Oar Denartine Soldiers.
This morning a gallant company of
soldiers leave for tbe camps at Griffin.
J edging by the dispatches from Wash
ington, they may be called from there
in a few days, and sent to Tampr. In
deed we may say that they may be
among tbe first volunteers to invade
Cuba.
As the people of Columbus bid tbe
Fencibles good-bye they are overcome
with feelings in which pride struggles
with grief. They are grieved that
these brave young men must go to tbe
front; they are proud that Columbus
has, through such stalwart sons, an
swered to tbe call of country. Os one
thing all feel assured ; wherever our
soldiers may be called, whatever tbe
dangers they-may have to face, they
will give a satisfactory account of
themselves, and will honor their city.
When Sergeant Garrett calls the roll
of tbe Browne Fencibles this morning
forty-nine men will answer to their
names May Providence so shield
them that when the last roll is called
before they are mustered out of ser
vice tbe same number will be present.
This is tbe earnest wish of Columbus
today—Columbus Enquirer Bur..
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications as they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the ear. There is
only one way to cure deafhess, and that is
by constitutional remedies. Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of tbe
mucous lining ot the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube is inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect nearing, and
When it is entirely closed, Deafness Is the
result, and unless the inflamation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its
normal condition, heating will be de
stroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are
caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but
an inflamed condition of the mucous sur
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars Tbr
any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh

COUNCIL MEETS.
[ Transact Considerable Business at
Meeting Last Night-
• '
b The city council held their regalsr
meeting last night, presided over by
Hi* Honor, Mayor Davis, with a full
board o( aidermen present.
The minute* of last meeting were
1 read and adopted.
1 Communications were read from
» the Morning Call and News and Sun
■ in which both papers made a bid for
I publishing the marshals sales for tax
I defaulters. Tbe price stipulated was
■ tbe regular orice for all legal adver
tisements, but tbe council, upon mo-
1 lion of Aiderman Patrick, laid tbe
* communications on (be table.
Considerable complaint was made
’ by property owners over the assessing
* of their property. Aiderman Moore
moved tbe whole matter be referred to
the finance committee, who shall ex
amine all, such petitions and make any
1 corrections in the assessments they
might deem proper. The motion was
1 carried.
The next question to occupy the at
tention of council was the printing of
a new code for tbe city. Aldermen
' Strickland was opposed to going to
that expanse at this time as the city’*
finances were low, on account of unu»
ual drains made upon it during tbe
early months of tbi* year. Tbe code
would cost S2OO and in bi* opinion
the matter should be deferred to some
future time.
Tbe city attorney was present and
stated the new code was painfully
needed, as tbe present one bad been
in use for about eight years, and bad
become almost obsolete. He thought
it tbe duty of the council to furnish
tbe citizens with a new one.
Tbe council discussed the subject at
length and upon motion of Alderman
Patrick it was ordered that the code
be revised and published at tbe price
named by tbe city attorney—s2oo.
Tbe petition to open up a new street
in northeast Griffin, near .Mrs. M. E.
Wilson’s, was reported upon-adverseiy.
Aiderman Moore, of tbe nuisance
committee, reported that complaints
bad been made about tbe throwing of
paper, asbes-and slops iqto the streets,
and said the matter should be attend
ed to. Capt, Gamp informed him that
the paper thrown in alleys in the bus
iness part of the city would eoon stop
up the sewers, and would cost the city
a considerable sum unless tbe nui
sance was ebaled.
Tbe committee appointed at last
meeting to secure a mule and cart
from the county commissioners to
gather up garbage 'every week was
not prepared to report and was given
further time.
The reports of the clerk and treas
urer and chief of police for mouth of
April were referred to finance comi
mittee.
Tbe bill from the tax assessors was
re%d tbp second time and brought
forth a lengthy discussion from each
member of the council. Il was tbe
concensus of opinion that the charges
were exborbitant.
Aiderman Blakely moved that tbe
matter be referred to the flnanc* com
mittee and that they inform tbe as
sessors that the amount was consider
ably more than in former years,
to protest against (ucli charges,"and to
make best settlement possible.
Mitchell moved that tbe
, water committee be authorized to cov
er tbe water tank with a suitable wire
J covering to keep out bugs and insect*,
i Alderman Blakely thought they should
consult Bupl Howard as to the neces-
I
; sity of such a covering and also as to
the cogt, before they took definite
. action, and the matter went over to
i the next meeting.
1 The city janitor’s resignation was
read and accepted. .
The matter of supplying tbe police
with such uniforms as tbey might be
in need of was referred to tbe police
committee with power to act.
A petition w»i read from tbe dea
cons of the Presbyterian church a*k
> ing that they be released from paying
I tax ou thsir parsonage, and the peti
-1 tioo was readily granted.
1 Bros, petitioned the council to
’ allow them to pay the additional tax
and have their license changed from
a sale to a livery stable, but the peti
tion was not granted.
There being no farther business, a
motion to adjourn prevailed.

The Interest ia Lagging-
( Hon. F. G. dußignon returned to
( tbe city yesterday from a trip to
. Washington and New York, says the
. Savannah New*. Mr. dußignon
i epoke interestingly of the intense ex
( citement in those cities over the war
situation.
With regard to state politics, Mr.
i dußignon said it could not be stated
now just what effect tbe war would
| have, though at the present time there
( is no question but that the interest in
state matters is lagging somewhat. Il
| would be manifestly unfair to many
, Democrats, he said, to use the regis
tration lists ot tbta year in the prima
ry of June 6. If kuy registration lilts
are used it will be that of 1896, or tbe
committee might, if it sees fit, decide
to use none at all, as only white Dem
ocrats are to be allowed to vote.
