Steamer Carries Over Arms and Am
munitions for Irsurgsnts
Tampa, Fla., May 10—The steamer
Gussie, one of the Mallory Hoe ol
boats, chartered by tbe government
for use as a traneport, sailed for Cuba
thia morning, loaded with arms, am
munition and supj Hee furnished by
tbe United Stales government for the
use of the Cuban ioeurgenta
A company of 100 United States
troops from tbe First regiment of in
fantry accompanied tbe expedition
and aided in guarding tbe landing of
the valuable cargo on the coast of Cu
ba and will, if necessary, penetrate in
to the interior far enough to place the
supplies in the bands of the insur
gents. Tbe expedition is iu charge of
Capt. J. H Doret, Geo. Miles’a aide,
who has just returned from Cuba.
The Gussie has on board between
six and seven thousand Springfield
rifles, about 200,000 rounds of ammu
nition and several hundred boxes of
provisions, consisting of canned meats
and hardtack.
The utmost secrecy is maintained
regarding the point of landing, but
in view of Captain Dorst’s recent
landing near Havana, where be com
municated with tbe insurgent leader,
General Delgady, it is believed that
the expedition will be headed for a
point not far from Havana. Tbe
Gcseie had mounted on her forward
deck a one-pounder rapid-fire gun for
protection. It is understood, how*
ever, that abe will be met at some
point not far from Key West by a
gunboat from the American blockade
squadron and escorted to the designa
ted landing place.
The Whitney, tbe sister ship to the
Gussie, which sailed for Dry Tortuga#
Saturday with two companies of the
Fifth infantry has returned. It is in*
limaled that she'will follow tbe Gus
sie to Cuba as soon as the arms, am
munition and supplies can be loaded.
Before a week has passed it is be
lieved that the insurgent leaders will
have been furnished arms enough for
at least 15,000 men and with a base of
supplies established on the coast, a
vigorous campaign against the Span
ish forces will be inaugurated.
Large amounts of powder and pro
jectiles fotJhe blockading squadron
are now arriving here. On Picnic
island there are twelve cars loaded
with dynamite torpedoes, powder and
ammunition, which will coon be ship
ped to Key West, and there are as
many more cars on tbe wharf tracks.
An extra heavy guard has been placed
around tbe cars with orders to shoot
any one attempting to tamper with
tbe seals. Hundreds of carpenters are
at work today fitting up tbe big trans
ports. Heretofore the work has been
rather slow, owing to the lack of mate
rial, but it is believed now that all of
tbe boata here will be in readiness for
loading by Wednesday night.
The engineers ol tbe ships ban been
drilled in tbe use of the big canvas
pontoons which are part of their equip
ment. In the capacious bold of tbe
Alamo are stored enough of these
pontoons to form a bridge several bun
died feet in length/ They will be
carried along with the expedition.
