One thing ‘hat has been demonstra
ted very thoroughly in onr sea fights
is tbnt the man behind the gun Is a
factor as Important as the calibre of
the gun or the thickness of the ships
armor —Augusta Chronicle.
A politic! On recently gave this ad
vice to a neighbor's son wbo was nom
inated lor office : “Lean a little toward
everything, and commit yourself to
nothing. Be perfectly round like a
bottle, and just dark enough so that
nobody can see what’s in ye.”
gjiLUm'.
There wiy hereafter be respect for
the United Stales flag in every port in
the world, for it will be recognised
that a wsbip flying that flag is a for
midable fighting machine and that
the men on the ship can shoot straight
and do not care fox sise or number of
the other side when ehooting time
comes
The length of Mr. Gladstone’s polit
ical service can be measured by the
fact that he entered parliament at a
time when Andrew Jackson was Presi
dent of the United States and retired
from it when Mr. Cleveland had begun
bis second term. He held hie first
cabinet office when Daniel Webster
was also serving in a like capacity
here.
The auxiliary cruiser Yosemite,
manned by the Michigan naval bri
gade, is said to have more millionaires
on hoard doing the rough and dirty
work of the ship, such as cleaning
decks, loading coal and cleaning spit
toons than can ba found in any swell
yacht dub. This is a great country
and it doesn’t belong to any one
class. —Houston Post.
It is well to know that the followers
of the bright banner which we revere
are as magnanimous in victory as they
are fierce and indomitable in conflict.
It is good to feel that the flag of this
free land will not be sullied by acts of
infamy and wickedness on the part of
those who fight beneath its folds. All
honor to our “boys in blue” and to the
gallant gentlemen who lead them I
Washington Post.
A good deal of credit for the navy’s
good work is doe to Theodore Roose
velt. While he was assistant secretary,
and long before there was actual dan-,
ger of war, he insisted that a large
stock of ammunition should be sent to
Dewey. At the time Dewey’s ammu
nition was almost exhausted. The
value of that precaution is now well
known; At another time Mr. Roose
velt had the North Atlantic squadron
. assembled at Hampton Roads, and
asked for a sham battle The com
manders told him that they had about
“ exhausted their practice ammunition,
and that their supply was not suffi
cient for the drill be wished. He im-.
mediately ordered that they go ahead
anyway, and draw upon their regular
stocks for all they needed to carry out i
z the directions. The value of the prao- i
lice was shows during the fight off 1
Santiago a week ago last -Sunday. '

OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organisation to the present time it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of $716,000,000. ~
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company m the world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies.
What is beat far the company should be bestfor the insured. And for best
results tvke a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE. . , n , M
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pnde of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hitad of W shjjl
be provided with a guaranteed, income lor hie. The MUTUAL LIFE,
strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Life is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
