Augusta Keller, of Newark, ia one
ol the gunners aboard the battleship
Indiana. Io a letter to hia brother
Charles, Keller claims the distinction
ol having fired the first shot in the
naval battle off Santiago, a shell from
one of the forward 13 inch guns.
Keller said that al3 shell froth his
vessel went clear tbroughoneof the tor
pedo boats and then exploded, sending
the boat to the bottom. Toward the
end of the battle, be writes, when it
was seen that the Vizcaya was almoat
defeated, the Bailors io his turret
scratched on one of the sheila in big
letters. ''Remember the Maios.-” It
was then run into ths breech, and the
gun carefully sighted. Everyone was
expectant as to tbe result of tbe shot.
When the lanyard was pulled, Keller
says, the big shell was seen to strike tbo
stern of the Vizcaya, tearing it to
pieces and setting tbe vessel on fire.
