Cadia i* about one-third of the dis
tance from Santiago to Manila. When
Watson’s squadron has concluded its
business at Cadis and thereabouts, he
may got orders to go on and join
Dewoy. The conjunction of their
commands would be sufficient warning
to any Emperor who might' be prowl
ing about the East in search for what
ever he might be able to pick up that
it would be well to consult Uncle Sam
before claiming that "finding* is keep
ings”
Jual the possibility of being • target
for the gunners of the American navy,
makes the Jin ess of the Spaniards
quake with fear. Admiral Camera left
Cadis on a little cruising expedition,
and as he heard that Commo
dore Watson would leave America and
forod Dith into an engagement he im*
mediately shows the white feathers
and seeks safety iu a strongly fortified
harbor. As soon as Santiago falls and
preparations begin for the attack on
Porto Rico, Captain General Maciaa
makes frantic appeals to bis govern*
meat for inetroctione, which bo hopes
will allow him to surrender before
being plugged at with 13. inch shells.
The Santiago Campaign-
The Santiago campaign has been a
complete success. It was undertaken
for the purpose of destroying Admiral
Corvera’o fleet. That fleet greatly in*
torfered with our plane (or accom
plishing the object for which the war
was undertaken. The fleet has dis
appeared forever, and, as a further re*
salt of the campaign, a very consider
able part of the Spanish army in Cuba
has so r rendered to us and a large part
of Eastern Cuba bas passed into our
possession. The person who finds
fault with what either the navy or the
army baa accomplished in the cam
paign must be bard to please.
Those who were disposed a few days
ago to criticise harshly Gen. Shafter’s
management of the campaign, are
willing to admit now probably that
they were hasty in forming judgment.
But, even if they should insist that
tbeir criticisms were justified by the
facts they will like an audience to
sympathize with their view". The
» success which bas been attained is as
great as was possible—the fleet having
been destroyed and the army captured.
Tho people therefore are satisfied, and
| are willing that the general who con
ducted the campaign shall have all
the credit and honor to wbioblhe full
est measures of success entitles him
If mistake! were made the military
critic* will discuss them. The general
public is not now particularly con
cerned with them
Tho term* of surrender were such as
we could freely grant without subject
ing ourselves to the criticism of being
too willing to make concession*, and
ouch as the '’ Spaniards could accept
without feeling that they had been
subjected to unnecessary humiliation.
Different views will probably be ex
pressed in respect to them, but the
prevailing opinion will be that the
terms wore arranged by those who de
sired to do what was fair and best for
all interests.
Now that the Santiago campaign is
ended our soldiers should be removed
from the vicinity of that place as
quickly as possible. It is an un
healthy spot, and there are nu sani
tary precautions possible that would
keep them free from the yellow fever.
To avoid an epidemic among them
they most be removed from the island

The Best Company is the Company
that does thfe Most Good.
MUTUAL iff INSURJNGE CO.
. OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
• Since organisation to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of $716,000,000.
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company m the world.
It piotects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what ig best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life. The MUTUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe-—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Life is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A: McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
RICHARD A. McCURDY, President."
