If we decide to leave Cobs inde
pendent and in the enjoyment of home
rule, it will still be within our power
and may be our duty >o continue to
occupy Cuba, as England does Egypt,
until it is able lozgovern itself satis
factorily and is aafe from interference
on the part of any foreign power.
SegMta’s claim that the United
States occupied Porto Rico after peace
negotiations had been inaugurated,
won’t go down. Miles had hoisted
tbe flag on Porto Rican soil twenty
lour hours before the Frence ambas
sador called at tbe white bouse with a
proposition from Spain for terms of
peace.
No counter proposition will be con
sidered. There will be no haggling
back and forth. A failure of the pres
ent negotiations will be Spain’s low,
not ours. By accepting our terms she
will retain a part of her colonial pos
sessions and probably survive as a na
tion. By rejecting them she must
inevitably low all.
Porto Bico, it is noted, is tbs most
densely populated region in tbe new
world. With an area of 108 by 40
miles it has a population of between
800,000 and 900,000 souls. Add to
tbew 100,000 Americans who will
flock there within the next lew years.
Porto Rioo, under American rule, will
bloom and blossom like the rose.
Sir Henry Irving has about sixty
pairs of spectacles either at hU home
or tbe theater. Tbe reason is that be
is perpetually losing them, and when
busy with some production would find
himself considerably handicapped did
he not know where to put bis band on
another pair. At various spots in tbe
Lyceum he has about two dozen pairs;
no workman ever-dreams of removing
them, and he la constantly buying new
ones.
A report from Admiral Dewey says
tbe movements of tbe Asiatic squad
ron were hampered by tbe Raleigh,
whose machinery.,was, and is, defect*
ive. The Raleigh is a government
built craft, says tbe Savannah News
She never had a speed trial, or other
wvere test, of her engines and boilers.
Vessels built by contract are made to
show their capabilities before they are
accepted. Since there was nobody up-
Son whom to levy a penalty if tbe ship
was found deficient, the Raleigh went
into comm>sion without being put
through her paces as other ships are.

Off the coast of Porto Rico and Cuba
there are a number of small islands
which do not appear On tbe ordinary
maps, and are unknown except to sea
* faring men who vine them. Some
of these islands, however, are large
enough to be fortified. It is held by a
certain "diplomatic authority,’’ quoted
in tbe Philadelphia Press, that each
and every one of these little
specks of land ought to be included
io the memorandum of tbe terms of
peace that is negotiated between the
(United States and Spain, otherwise
Spain will attempt to hold on to tbe
small islands afler she has signed an
agreement releasing Cuba and Porto
Rico. Spanish diplomacy is nqL above

records, however, show that since lbs
beginning of the ureseut insurrection
io Cuba there have been sent to thr
island not not levs than 175310 Spsn
isb soldiers, and lhet there were on th<

Approximately 23.000 were enerrmlef

unreasonable to suppose that as many
more bare been killed, dirabhd or
returned to Spain during the last four
years Placing at approximately 60, a

of, it would appear that in tbe neigh

remain In Cuba; and the probabilities
are that not less than 100,000 of them
are in the province of Havana.—Sa

THE
MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND.
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
' Sinpe organization to tbe present time, it has paid and now holds on

Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in the world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results tvke a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the crud hand of saw, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income tor life. The MUTUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe-—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home—the Mutual Life is
prepaied to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter’ of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to awn re every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.

A Prominent Physician.
A prominent New York physician
in discussing the merits of Ripans
Tabulee with a brother M. D. said:
*' Several years ago I asserted that
if one wished to become a philan
fhopist, and do a beneficent deed—
one that would help the whole hu
man race—nothing could be better
than to procure the Roosevelt Hos
pital prescription, wkith it the ba sit
of the Ripant Tabules, and cause it to
be put up in the form of a ketchup
and distributed among the poor?’

A reporter who went there to learn
how Ripans Tab

bought a five-cent

•'Do you have
much call for
these?”
He waa referred

proved to be the
head of the depart
ment. He said:
** The sale of Ripens Tabules is
constant and is increasing, due
especially to the influential character
of the testimonials in the daily press,
and growing out of these, through
the recommendation of friend to
friend. Satisfaction with them is
very general When once they art
begun I notice that a permanent
customer for them is made. This, 1
believe, is through their intrinsic
merit, which proves the bona fide
character of the advertising. I think
them specially useful in the general
run of stomach troubles.”

An elderly lady living at Fordham

advocate of Ripans Tabules for any

said to a reporter who visited her for
the purpose of learning the particu

the last occasion I had for one, but
at that time obtained no beneficial

Ripans Tabules recommended very
