Official Paper of tt!« Ordinary
of Spalding coonty and the City

The Grand Lodge oi Masons of
Georgia will meet in anneal com mu
niCstionin Macon on October 25 at 10
o'clock. Grand Secretary Wolibin la
now engaged in out notices
to that effect.
It ie estimated that the population
of the world ia increasing at the rate
of 1,500,000 souls each year. To be
exact the birth rate is 70 a minute
and the death rate 67 a minute. This
difference of only three per cent
makes the total 1,500,000.
The Queen Regent of Spain appears
to be a brave and sensible woman abd
a devoted mother. Americans would
help her, if they could, against such
bourbons and reactionaries as Don
Carlos and ibe Weyler military crowd.
But the good lady Is in bad company
and will have to take the cones
quences —Houston Pest.
The demonstration, of the Porto
Ricans on the arrival of the American
troops and the occupation of Ponce
and other places is a sufficient justifl
catiou of the invasion. The joy of the
people in their new found freedom in
dicate. plainly enough what they have
had to suffer and endure iu silence
under Spanish rule.—Charleston News
and Courier.
We fear Capt. Sampson has disap
pointed bis friends. His grudging re
ferences to Schley are not the cheerful
and frank acknowledgement of honor
to whom honor is due they bad led us
to expect. Tbe captain’s attitude is
not crbhitable and cannot be covered
up by sinister suggestions and veiled
insinuations about Schley’s failure to
regard previous orders.—Chicago
Journal.
It turns out that Admiral Dewey is
descended from Alfred tbe Great, "the
wisest, greatest prince that ever ruled
in England,” who in the spring of 877
drove an invading fleet of 120 Danish
chips on shore, causing the destraction
of all on board. There must be some
thing in pedigree when its influence
can come out so strong after lying
dormant over a thousand years.-
Philadelphia Record.
That the naval tide of the war, at
leist, is about over is indicated in the
statement that the navy department
will transfer to the war department
the four magnificent ocean liners of
the American line which have been
in service as auxiliary cruisers, and
which the war department will use
hereafter as transports. It is to be
hoped that it will not be a great while
before these vessels can resume their
former and peaceful business of trans
porting passengers and freights be
tween America and Europe
An effort is to be made, as soon as
Congress convenes, to have a law
passed to raise the strength of the
regular army to not less than 60,000
men, and possibly 100,000. Adjutant
General Corbin says that the latter
number is wbat the country ougbt to
have, since it is assured that it will be
necessary to keep troops io Cuba and
Porto Rico for some time to come,
while it is very probable that we shall
have to have an army in the Philip*
pines, and possibly some troops in
Hawaii, for an indefinite period.

several years younger than Gladstone,
but lor years had stood at the head of
German statesmen just as Gladstone
had lowered above those of England.
Gladstone’s end came slowly and slier

——THE
MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organization to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of $716,000,000.
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in the world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE,
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life. The MUTUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongt
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home—the Mutual Life it
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we giyp the following extract from a letter of tht
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy. -
RICHARD A. McOURDY, President.”

A Prominent Physician.
A prominent New York physician
in discussing the merits of Ripans
Tabules with a brother M. D. said:
Several years ago I asserted that
If one wished to become a philan
thopist, and do a beneficent deed
one that would help the whole hu
man race—nothing could be better
\ than to procure the Roosevelt Hos
pital prescription, wkich is the basis
of the Jli/asu Tetbules, and cause it to

The largest retail drug store in
America ia that of Hegeman & Co.
on Broadway in New York City.
A reporter who went there to learn
how Ripans Tab

bought a flve-cent
carton and asked:
‘•Do you have
much cull for
these?”
He was referred
to a gentleman who
proved to be the
head of the depart-
ment. He said:
•• The sale of Ripens Tabules is
constant and is increasing, due
especially to the influential character
ofthe testimonials in the daily press,
and growing out of these, through
the recommendation of friend to
friend. Satisfaction with them is
vary general When once they are
begun I notice that a permanent
customer for them is made. This, 1
believe, is through their intrinsic
merit, which proves the bona fide
Character of tbe advertising. I think
them specially useful in the general
ran of stomach troubles.”

An Elderly Lady.

at that time obtained no beneficial
results. I had never had any faith
in patent medicines, but having seen
Ripans Tabules recommended very

found they were just what my case
demanded. I have never employed
a physician since, and that means a

name in the newspapers, but to do
this the elder lady argued : “There

about my case in the papers enables
