The expenses of the postoffloe de>
partmoot last year were $93,000,000.
The receipts were $82,000,000 This
year, it is expected, the receipt* will
reach $100,000,000, breaking all ro-
Fifteen million dollars, the eatima*
ted cost of Gen. Wade’s expedition to
Porto Rico, is a large sum to spend
just to give some gallant volunteers a
chance to say that they have been to
war —Chicago Daily News.
•Another suit is to be entered to
compel telegraph companies to psy
the revenue tax stamp on telegrams,
this time by a western railroad which
makes heavy use of the wires. This
will be a fight between corporations to
see which of them must be made to
beer the burden, while the people will
look on with tbe hope that anybody
but the telegraph companies will win.
A month ago, even the moat far see
ing prophet would hardly have hax
arded the prediction that August
would find th* Spanish and American
armies embarking, or about to embark,
from eastern Cuba en masse. The
proverbial uncertainty of war has
again been exemplified by the many
unlooked-for happenings of tbe con*
fliot, and this incident is one of the
strangest. Conquered and conqueror
will simultaneously quit the scene of
their respective defeat and triumph
Philadelphia Times.
The country is wakiog up to the
fact that we have too many lawyers,
and some states are adopting meas*
urea to remdy the evil. The rapid
increase of lawers is multiplying courts
to make business for them. It now
takes three immense volumes to con
tain Georgia’s Code. Two thirds
of it should be wiped ont.
Let us have fewer and simjttor
laws. Special laws are a nuisance
—they are seldom really necessary.
Let us have general laws—operating
in all tbe counties of the state alike.
The taan primarily responsible for
all the mismanagement and indirectly
for great suffering and loss of life is
Secretary Alger, and tbe president
should not only recognise tbe fact, but
act upon that recognition. If be
should not do so, congress will surely
make an investigation, for congress
represents tbe people, who are justly
indignant when they find tbe brave
men, who fought their battles, grossly
neglected without tbe excuse of lack
of means to help them. Even military
success cannot wipe out the disgrace
ful stain attached to the war depart*
ment by reason of its gross misman*
agement —Philadelphia Ledger.
A naval officer once wrote, describ
ing conditions on one of tbe monitors:
“The scene iu the fire room that
morning was not of this earth. Tbe
heat waa almost destructive of life;
tools, ladders, doors and all fittings
were too hot to touch, and tbe place
was dense with smoke escaping from
furnace doors, for there was absolute
*ly no draught. The men collected to
'-build up the fires were tbe best of
these remaining fit for duty, but they
were worn out physically, were
nervous apprehensive and despirited.
Bough Irish firemen, who would
stand, in a fair fight, until killed in
their tracks, were crying like children
and begging to be allowed to go on
deck, SO completely unnerved and
unmanned by tbe cruel ordeal they
Bgr had endured so long ‘Hell afloat’ is
a nautical figure of speech often idly
used, but then we saw it.”

The Best Company is the Company

THE
MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LAItGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organization to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of 5>716,000,000. ... u
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company m the world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has thia clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income for life. The MU TUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe—-twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee. •
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called unon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Life is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who h ft ve a pohey
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in tins Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
