It is said that severe rains develops
ed the fact that a large number of the
shoes of soldiers in the Virginia camps
were made of compressed paper in
stead of leather, and another report is
to She effect that many of the shirts
sold to the government for the private
soldiers are turning a dirty pink. The
court martial should be made to ex
tend to contractors who supply the
army. There h»* been a grievous
fault somewhere that needs a remedy.
We are hurrying our soldiers out of
Cub* as fast as possible, and it will be
a good place for civilian* to stay away
from for tbe next two months. Owing
to the unsettled condition* which will
prevail for some time to come, there is
little probability that anything of im
portance in a business way can be ac
complished there before October. No
time will be lost, therefore, by making
haste slowly and waiting until it is
safe to spy out tbe land.—Baltimore

Chief Justice Brewer of tbe United
State eupreme court opposes the an
nexation not only of tbe Philippines,
but also of Cuba and Porto Rico, be
cause he says these colonies can be
managed only by force, a course which
he holds is thoroughly inconsistent
with the Monroe doctrine, say. the
Savannah News. Tbe annexation of
tbe Philippines and that of Porto Rico
ar* two entirely different questions;
tbe one involves territorial expansion
in a direction which tbe Monroe doc
trine particularly sought to avoid, and
tbe other the annexation of an island
wbiob by position ought to be Ameri
can. There are no indications that
tbe government of Porto Rico will re
quire any material additions to the
army.
A Transvaal doctor is credited with
the discovery of a new curative treat
ment, says tbe St. Louis Globe-Demo
crat. He assert* that he can cure
person, of smallpox, fevers, diptberia
and many other maladies by simply
wrapping them in milk sheets. Tbe
patient is laid on a mattress covered
with blankets, and is packed in a sheet
just large enough to envelop tbe body.
Tbe sheet ba* been saturated in a pint
and a half of sweet milk, and is ap
plied to the body without wringing.
After lying still for an hour thus
swathed, tbe patient is sponged with
Warm water, or put into a warm bath
for a few moments to remove the milk.
Tbe treatment is based on tbe germ
absorbing power of milk, and tbe idea
of it is said to have been suggested by
tbe fact that milk absorbs poisonous
germs from a bucket in r whicb it has
been standing.

The Best Company is the Company
that does the Most Good.
MUTUAL MMNGE CO.
OF NSW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organization to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of $716,000,000.
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in_tpe world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life. The MUTUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier whb feels called upon to avenue the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Life is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy: >
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
RICHARD A. McCURDY, President.
