There are curious mutterings in tbe
European press. It Is even intimated
that if we conclude to lake over the
islands that conclusion will be over
ruled by tbe same powers which pre
vented Japan from reaping the fruits
ot her victory over China. 1. there
really a etatesman or a publicist in
Europe, Tueton or Latin, who believes
that Germany, Russia and France,
acting all together, have any terrors,
in any question relating to tbe Pacific
ocean, for Great Britain, Japan and
tbo United States, acting all together?
—Now York Times.
There is talk of a hot skirmish be
tween tbe army and the navy in New
York, with the Republican nomina
lion lor Governor, as the prize contest
ed for cays tbe Savannah News. Tbe
Herald announces that Commodore
Philip, formerly Oapt.“Jack” Phillip
of the battleship Texas, will probably
enter tbe lists for tbe nomination, in
opposition to Col. Theodore Roosevelt.
Commodore Philip was born in New
York state fifty seven years ago, and
while be has never taken an active
part in politico, it is claimed that ha
io a good enough Republican to ans
wer all requirements. Philip and
Roosevelt are both very popular, be
cause of their brilliant war records,
benee a contest between them would
arouse a good deal of interest. Mean
time, it Is well enough to bear in mind
that such hard-beaded fighters as
those men are, are not tbe sort of tim
ber that the bosses usually pick out to
be given nominal tons.
Spain Will Bear Watching.
There it a growing opinion that our
government should not be too hasty in
mustsring its troops out ol service and
in putting its vessels out of fighting
trim. Tho Spaniards are a treaobers
one people, and it ia difficult at this
time to say what kind of pledges Spain
may make or whether she will keep
auoh as are made, pending the final
negotiations for peace. Oar govern,
ment will have to watch Spain, and
after the treaty of peace is signed, we
will no doubt have to enforce tbe
terms with force. Our army and navy
should be kept io good shape until tbe
war io over sure enough. Spain io a
procrastinator and will kill aS much
time as she can during the negotia
tions. She will haggle at every point
of tbe proceedings aod will doubtless
ra’se all kinds of objections tn aearly
everything proposed by our govern
-_meot. We hope we are mistaken, but
Spain's conduct in the past has not I
been ouch as to inspire our confidence I '

There is a vast amount of open air
oratory in Hyde park, London, on Sun

Others are vehement against capitalists.

Social ism is championed in one corner

MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE GO.
OF TIEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organization to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of $716,000,000. .
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in the world.
It protects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has thiß elause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of al! the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life. The MU I'UAL LIFE, the
E strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
■ Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
: to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home—the Mutual Life is
: prepaied to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
: in tnis grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
! president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
RICHARD A. McOURDY, President.”
