A Rough Bond.
Man's life io full of crosses and
temptations says an exchange. That
is trus for a fact. He comes into Ibis
world without bis consent and goes
out of it against bis will, and bio trip
between the two eternities is exceed
ingly rough. The rule of contrariness
is one of the important features of the
trip. When he is little the girls ktss
him. If he raises a large family he is
called a poor man, but if he raises a
small check be is a thief and a fraud
and is shunned like a Chinaman with
the itch. If he is poor he is a bad
manager, if he is rich he is dishonest,
if he ie in politico it's for pie, if be is
out of politico you can’t tell where to
place him and be is po good to bio
country, if be does an act of charity
it's for policy, if he won't give to
charity he’s stingy and lives only for
himself, if he dies young there was a
great future ahead of him, if be lives
to a ripe old age he has missed bis
calling. He is introduced to tbisg
world by a doctor and to the next
by the same process Verily, the road
is rough, but men like to travel it.

Funny Advertisements.
Curiously worded advertisements,
which are funny without intent, are
common in tbe London papers, it
would seem. A contemporary recently
offered a prize for the best collection
of such announcements, and the fol
lowing is the result:
"Annual sale now on. Don’t go
elsewhere to be obeated-oome in here.”
“A lady wants to sell her piano, as
she is going abroad in a strong iron
frame.”
•'For Sale—A pianoforte, the prop
erty of a musician with carved lege.”
"Wanted—A room by two gentle
men about thirty feet long and twenty
feet broad.”
"Lost—A collie dog by a man ou
Saturday evening answering to Jim
with a brass collar round bis neck and
a muzzle."
"Wanted—By a respectable girl, her
passage to New York; willing to take
care of children and a good sailor.”
"Mr. Brown, furrier, begs to ana
□ounce that be will make up gowns,
capes, etc, for ladies out of their own
skirte.”
"Bulldog for sale; will eat anything;
very fond of children.”
"Wanted—An organist and a Bby to
blow the same.”
"Wanted—For the summer, a cot

drainage.”
"Lost—Near Highgate archway, an

with a bent rib and a bone handle.”
"Widow in comfortable circum
stances wishes to marry two sous.”
“To be disposed of, a small phaeton,
the property of a gentleman with a
moveable headpiece as good as new.”
The last is a copy of an inscription
painted on a board which adorned a
fence in Kent:
"Notice—ls any man’s or woman's
cows gets into these here otes, bis or
her tail will be cut off as tbe case may
be."
