Senator Caffery asserts that Senator
Platt of Now York waa responsible for
the defeat ol the national quarantine
bill, which waa never even called up
in Congress. Tbe reason given for
Senator Platt’s opposition is that there
ar* a number of fat offices under tbe
state quarantine system in New York.
Under a national system, these places
would either be abolished, or become
federal patronage, and might thus
slip out of the grasp of the New York
politicians.

-MUTUAL LMSURINCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It has al way* held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the particulars
of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has m this in.
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
The dividends amounted to. ..12,Pr0, w
Paid to the estate .$17,038.00
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilise any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. 1,283. T Issued March 5,1845. . Amount $5,000.
Age 40. ; Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plan.
Original insurance In 1845, ; •
Dividend additions paid in 1898, ..12,028.00
Amount of death claim
54 Premiums paid by insured ••
Realized to estate over premiums paid........................... $8,388.00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2|) per
cent, compound interest per annum, with Insurance increasing annually from go.vou
at age 40, to $17,028 at ageUi/ k „ , u .
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance.
Mr. Mark Banka was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and nis wisdom is exemplified by the result ot
nis method of investment—a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
