if Griffin,
The Sparta Ishmaelite thinks there
are hundreds of useless offices in
Georgia. But there are plenty of men
waiting to fill them.
The handwriting of R. D. Black'
more, tbe novelist, Is so fine as often
to neceseltate the use of a magnifying
glass by his printers.
When the Georgia farmers go to
making supplies at home, start up tbe
neighborhood blacksmith and shoe
ehope and tan yards, and country
mills, and come beck into tbe Demo
cratic party, there will be more happi
ness to the acre in Georgia than in
any other state In tbe Uoion.—Brune*
wick Advertiser.
Tho baneful effects of the Hobson
kiss are again apparent. At Chicago,
while tbe President was receiving, an
enthusiastic girl, who proclaimed her*
self a '‘Democrat," told Mr. McKinley
that she "loved him and would like
to kies bl tn.” Tbe crowd relieved tbe
President of bis embarrassment by
sweeping tbe girl along before it, and
her desire romaine ungratified.
Too Late to Arbitrate.
There should here been no peace
protocol, and no peace commission.
The war ebould have been brought to
an end with a treaty of peace, stating
ail of the terma plainly, says the Sa
vannah News. Having no alternative,
Spain would have signed snob a treaty
a* readily as she signed the protocol.
However, all of that is of the past,
Spain may regard the protocol and
the commission as concessions to ber
if she lihes. but if she is expecting
still further concession*, in the way of
submitting to arbitration points which
msy be disputed between ber com
missioners and those of the United
Blates, sbe is doomed to disappoint
ment.
The refusal of the American com
missioners to consider proposals to
arbitrate radical differences has
aroused adverse comment on the part
of the Paris press and has caused the
Spanish commissioners to send to
Madrid for new instructions. But the
effect upon the American commission
ers will be nil. Their position will
have the support of tbeir own govern
ment and people.
The time tor arbitration is past.
The United States might have acceded
to such * proposition before the war,
when they requested Spain to put an
end to the horrors of her war in Cuba
At that time, however, Spain said sbe
was attending to ber own business in
her own way, and that abe would
continue to do so; that sbe bad noth
ing to arbitrate. Now the United
States are attending to tbeir business,
of granting peace to Spain, and they
will follow tbeir own inclinations in
the matter.
It ia reasonable to assume from the
recent speeches of the President and
from other evidences, that the minds
of the President and bis adviser* re
specting the terms of peace with Spain
have already been made up. It has
been determined what demands will
bo made upon Spain—whether she
will have to give up tbe Philippine* as
well as Cuba and Porto Rico—and
Spain must accept sbe determination
There is nothing else for her to do.
There ia nothing to arbitrate.

Something About Igypt.
Egypt under Greet Britain gives
magnificent or ide nee of the value to
an otherwise unprogreseivo country of
tbe extension al the rule of the Anglo-
Saxon. In proportion to its popula
tion It has more railway mileage now
than Austria Hungary, Spain or Por
tugal. Its imports have increased
from 185,000,000 in 1875 to $50,900,-
000 In 1896, an increase <4 100 per
cent, in twenty one years ' Until 1891
rogds in the true sense of the word
did not exist in the country. At the,
end of 1897 tbe statistics showed that
1,087 miles of excellent roads had
been completed through Lower and
Middle Egypt. Tbe exports of cotton
have been doubled in twenty one
years, despite increasing production
of other cotton growing countries.
Each year Egypt is becoming more
of an importing country. Thus Great
Britain not only is raising the land of
tbe fellah in the scale, but is opening

Breaks The Dividend. Record.
It has always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa

of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has m this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results: •
Mr. Banka was insured for
The dividends amounted to _l____
Paid to the estate. ’...... *
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums m cash, an<t
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. 1,233. Issued March 5,1845. Amount $5,000.
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plmi.
Original insurance in 1845,
Dividend additions paid in 1898,
Amount of death claim

at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94.
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance.
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by tbe result oi

A Prominent Phyalclan.
A prominent New York physician
in discussing the merits of Kipans
Tabules with a brother M. D. said:
“ Several years ago I asserted that
If one wished to become a philan
thopist, and do a beneficent deed—
one that would help the whole hu
man race—nothing could be better
than to procure the Roosevelt Hos
pital prescription, whith is the basis
of the Rifaeu Tabules, and cause it to
be put up in the form of a ketchup
ana distributed among the poor.’’
Salos Increasing.
The largest retail drug store in
America is that of Hegeman & Co.
on Broadway in New York City.
A reporter who went there to learn
how Ripans Tab
ules were selling
bought a five-cant
carton and asked:
••Do you have
much call for
these?”
He was referred
to a gentleman who
proved to be the
head of the depart
ment. He said:
" The sale of Ripans Tabules is
constant and is increasing, due
especially to the influential character
of the testimonials in the daily press,
and growing out of these, through
the recommendation of friend to
friend. Satisfaction with them is
very general When once they are
begun I notice that a penna- mt
customer for them is made. This, 1
believe, is through their intrinsic
merit, which proves the bona fide
character of the advertising. I think
them specially useful in the general
run of stomach troubles.”
