AY EXPLOSION OF GAS
—;— „ \
Wrecks a Portion of the Capitol at
Washington-
WABHiwaTOM, No*. 7.—An explo
eion and firn at 5:13 yesterday alter
noon wrecked the eupreme court room
•od the rooms immediately adjoining
ft on the main floor of the capital.
Tbe entire central eastern part of
the great marble pile from the mein
floor to tbe subterranean basement io
practically a mam of rains.
Tbe force of the explosion was so
heavy that the coping stones on tbe
outer-walla just east of tbe point
where tbe explosion occurred were
bulged out nearly two inches; win
dows in all that part of the building
were blown out; and lacked dodrO
were forced from their binges quite a
hundred and fifty feet from tbe scend
of it. ■ .
Fire followed tbe explosion so quick*
ly as to seem practically simultaneous
with it.
The explosion shook tbe immense
structure to its foundations and was
beard several squares from the capilol.
It occurred in a email room tightly
enclosed by heavy stone walls in the
subterranean bisement immediately
below tbe main entrance to tbe old
capital building, and was caused by
the igniting of escaping gas.
Tbe capital building has been dam*
aged a number of times before by fire,
but it is said yesterday’s fire will prove
tbe most disastrous in the history of
tbe building. On the occasions prior
to this, fires have been started by ex
plosions of gas.
In the opinion of capital officials
and mechanics, who have examined
the structure, tbe loss will reach prob
ably $200,000 to tbe building. Tbe
lose on tbe library and records can *be
scarcely estimated in dollars and
cents. A million dollars could not
replace them, because many of them
no duplicates are in existence.
The Joker’s Happy Death*
The funny man, whose business it
”'as to construct tbe weekly page of
jokes for tbe Sunday Yell, lay on a
hospital cot swathed in bandages, says
.an exchange.
He was not long for this earth.
Early that morning he had tried con*
elusion with tbe front end of an elec
tric car, with tbe usual result. Tbe
funny man's lips moved and he mut
tered incoherently. A hospital in
terne stepped softly to the side of the
sufferer’s cot and bent his bead for
ward to listen
•‘I care not to live,” murmured tbe
jukist. “The one light in my dreary
existence went out last week when
my precious one passed away from
Ibis earth.”
“Yes?” said the young surgeon in
terrogatively.
“Bbe is dead,” continued the dying
man. “During her lifetime we lived
together at tbe same boarding bouse.
Ebe did society (or tbe Yell and wrote
poetry for tbe Sunday issue, which
effusions she signed lolantbe. I called
her Jo for brevity.”
'‘lndeed?” said the surgeon softly.
“Last week,” went on the profess
sional jokeet, “she attended a wed
ding in a cold, damp church, wrote an
account of the ceremony for tbe Yell,
came home and Was taken ill. Two
days later she died and left me in dets
pair. Abl Sweet lol”
Tbe surgeon, visibly affected by tbe
suffer’s tale, could not restrain bisown
emotion
“Very sad,” be murmured in tbe
dying man’s ear. “What did Io die
oft”
A light of triumph came for one
brief instant in tbe joker’s fast dim
ming eyes as he answered, “lodide of
potassium,” and passed away before
tbe startled and enraged surgeon
could jump with both feet on his face.

FIELD DAT AT CAMP
The Soldiers at Camp Honken Have

Yesterday was field day at Camp

interesting throughout. *
Tbe exercises were advertised to be
gin at 2p. m., and long before that
hour arrived great crowds bad gather
*d around tbe parade grounds to wit
ness the athletic skill oi the soldier
boys.
Much credit is due the officers of the
Camp Northen Athletic Club for the
sueooss ot the day. Everything moved
like elock work. ,
The program and successful contest

Tbe program took up tbe entire af
ternoon—there being no drills and
the boys were at liberty to rest at
ease until immediately after tbe exer
cises when retreat was sounded and
roll called.
Each number was hotly contested,
several were repeated owing to lies.
Tbe wrestling match was the most
exciting and enjoyable event of tbe
day and Private O’Quinn showed him
self to be a much better man than one
would tbnk.
It is now thought tbe regiment will
leave the latter part of this week for
Savannah. They are now completing
all details preparatory to their depar
ture and it is the belief of those in
charge that they will leave by noon
Saturday.
An Important Difference.
To n .ake it apparent to thousands, who
think themselves ill, that they are not af
flicted with any disease, but that the sys

comfort home to their hearts, as a costive
condition is easily cured by using Syrup

Beware of Ointments for Catarrh That
Contain Xorcury
as mercury will surely destroy tbe sense
smell and completely derange the whole
system when entering it through the mu
cous surfaces. Buch articles should never
be used except on prescriptions from rep
utable physicians, as the damage they will
do is ten fold to the good you can possibly
derive from them. Hall’s Catarrh Cure,
manufactured by F. J. Ohepey & Co., To
ledo, Q-, contains no mercury, and is taken
internally, acting directly upon the blood
and mucous surfaces of the system. In
buying Hall’s Catarrh Cure be sure you
get the genuine. It is taken internally,
and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Chen

T. B. Rice, a prominent druggist of
Greensboro, Ga, writes as follows:
“I have handled Dr. Pitts’ Carminative
for eight years, and have never known of
a single instance where it failed to give
perfect satisfaction. Parties who once use
it always make permanent customers. We
sell more of this article than all the other
Carminatives, soothing syrups and colic
drupe combined.” For teething children
it has no equal.
