Betrayed by a Postage Stamp.
“Some folks always stamp their let
ters upside down for luck,” said a post
office inspector in a reminiscent mood,
according to tbe New Orleans Times
Democrat, “and others put the stamp
on the back, which makes the cancel
lation clerk forget his religion. I re
member we caught a fellow once in
tbe peculiar way be stamped a letter
He was wanted for frivoling with tbe
laws of Uncle Sam, bnt had skipped
out and couldn’t be located. In looking
over some of bis correspondence I bsd
noiiced thst be always put tbe stamp
on crosswise, so as to leave a small tri
angle of the envelope at tbe npper
right hand corner. ■
“Why be did it I don’t know, but
tbe stamp was always in tbat one par
ticular spot and gummed down with
mathematical accuracy. One day I
was in a certain Georgia town, and
while loafing near tbe cancellation
table at tbe poatoffice, noticed several
letters stamped as I have described.
Just on ebaoce I took a memoranda
of tbe address and postmark, which
was ChSjßanooga, and happening to
be in that place tbe following week, I
collared my man as be was asking for
bis mail. Tbe letters I noticed turned
out to be addressed te bis wife. When
I told him bow I got my pointer be
was mad as blazes, and I guess he
■tamps his letters straight now—if he
is out yet.”
