Ip ie a well-known fact, says the
New York Herald, that tbe cables
which unite Europe with America are
connected on the little island of St.
Pierre-Miquelon. The quanity of
electricity circulating for this reason
through the narrow strip of earth
which composes tbe island has result
ed in overcharging the soil with elec
tricity, and this superabundance of
electrical fluid has given rise to a very
strange experiment. By throwing an
isolated wire three kilometers in
length across the island, and then at
taching it to a metal plate which is
cast into the sea, it has been possible
to intercept in its transit a message
on its way from America to Europe
and vice versa, the overcharged elec
trical soil having turned the message
out of its original path.

The wrath of the Charleston Newt
and Courier towards tbe Georgia leg
islature because of its flippant treat
meat apd final killing of the anti dog
hill ie both righteous and vehement.
II says: "It could not be expected that
there would be rnuch sympathy for
sheep in a company of asses, and the
rips prevailed. It will always be so in
every legislature that ie composed of
men who cultivate the yellow dog vote
and are dependent upon it for their
stKcesa in politics. The destruction of
the dogs, which are of no earthly ben
efit to any industrial or worthy enter
prise, would mean the increase of
sheep, tbe production of wool, tbe es
tablishment of factories and tbe em>
ployment of men and women at living
wages." "Down in bis country," said
one of tbe Georgia legislators in favoa>
of tbe bill, "there was an average of 3.
dogs to every colored citizen." It is.
only when the Ist makers regard,, tbe
colored citixen in bis relations to, the
yellow dog that be receives nywb con
sideration. Georgia is with

MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It has always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the. particulars
of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
Mr . Banks was insured for • •• 15’222 22
The dividends amounted to. two.W
Paid to the estate $17,028.00
I How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. 1,233. Issued March 5,1845. Amount $5,000.
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plan
Original Insurance in 1845, so,ooo.
Dividend additions paid in 12,028.00
Amount of death claim.
' 54 Premiums paid by insured 8,640.00
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8.388 00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2f) per
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from SS,WO
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94. |
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for tbe insurance.
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by the result o:
his method of investment—a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
