SOCIALjALAD
PLEASANTLY REPORTED FOR
SUNDAY’S CALL.
The pathway to my lady’s heart
Is guarded by the sprites, her tastes.
One can not pass who salts but pait
Os these, while time one simply wastes
Who’d suit them all. No man shall be
A. band less likely to agree.
I win her Taste for Wit with jokes,
Which give her Sober Taste alarms;
Each word I offer her provokes
And pleases, grieves anl charms,
Some little warden of her grace
I didn’t know was on the place.
Among the band is one whp waits
Upon my orders. He must sweep
My path by drugging all his mates,
Then let me in while yet they sleep.
So little chap, this toast to thee:
“Success! ”My lady’s Taste for Me! ” •

Charles H. Hoyt has ever wielded a
keen, but kindly pen, in satirising the
fads of everyday life, but in - none of
them has he beyn happier than in the
satire on politics, “A Texas Steer,”
which came to the Olympic on Friday
evening of the past. week. In this
comedy, from the tor-eful entrance of
the plantation darkies, as they come
singing through the Texas cbapparel,
to the final exit of committee down
the back stairs, and out through the
alley, where they dump the garbage
from the Arlington hotel kitchen, in
Washington, D. C-, one laughable sit
uation follows another, and each stroke
of wit becomes wittier, and interest in
. the fortunes of the Brander family
never lingers nor lags for a moment;
while the (rai'.tiea of our system of pol
ities are held up to view in a most hu
morous manner Mr. Hoyt has inter
woven into “A Texas Steer” a pretty
little love story, without allowing
mawkishness to intrude among the
laughs, while tear-alarting pathos has
also found a place. In Haverick Bran
der, a keen old Texas cattleVnan, Mr.
Hoyt has given us a strong picture of
an honest man, wbo is unwillingly
plunged into our national politics,
with all good intentions on the start
but who finds the tide setting so very
strongly toward personal aggrandize
ment, brought within his reach by
reason of bis political position, that he
is unable to resist, and is soon taking
as a matter of fact, things that would
have shocked him before bis advent
into polities. The defense he makes
of his State is eloquently couched in
words so noble that it stands nut a pa
thetic appeal lor his, halarious fellow
citizens. The company that presented
thia most successful comedy is oce o!
the best that has ever been seen in it,
and the large audience at the Olympic
Friday evening was withal apprecia
tive and enthusiast ®.

z Despite the intense cold of Wednes
day morning, there was quite a num
ber of ladies present, at the regular
weekly meeting of the Cunent Topics
Club, at the residence of Mrs. Thomas
R. Mil). The topics were cleverly
handled, and the general discussion
which followed the reading of papers
was most interesting Seveial naw
and very pleasant features were added
to the regular program, one of which
was the giving of some current event,
instead of the usual at roil

“How to select and purchase food”
and “The bygenic values of different
methods of cooking.”

The well bred woman is very faalid»
ious, usually, about her stationery, and
keeps up with al! changes as they oc
cur. And these are a few facts which
may interest her: Monograms are
very small, and enclosed in oblong or
round medallions, like the modish
handkerchief ciphers of your aristo
cratic sweetheart. Gold on a colored
background is quite as fait. The ini
tials or first name done in one color,
•nd the background contrasting, is a
caprice of many. Sealingwax mono
grams, upon English authority, are
the newest, and used in conjunctions
with wafer waxes, for the adornment
of envelopes, are a quaint conceit of
tbe "moment. Monograms and create
invariably appear well io the left side
of tbe letter paper, whether tbe address
be printed upon it or not. Both name
and address may be used with impun
ity.

Even though the weather of last
Thursday was very disagreeable, many
callers were out, and tbe ladies of tbe

lertaining friendsand acqcantances. A
number of elegant gowns were noticed
that day, and handsome furs protected
the charming wearers from piercing
wim s. Mtb Thomas Mills, who is
very handsome and stately, and always
exquisitely dressed, wore a beautiful
gown of black, and with it a black vel
vet bat with many plumes. A touch
of crimson about the waist and on the
bat, gave the needed color to this
beautiful toilette Mrs. Eugene Rag
land was stylishly gowned in blue
cloth. Mrs. Seneca Burr Bawtell wore
one of the prettiest gowns seen that
day. It was of some soft clinging black
stuff, with a deep yoke of vivid green
tsffettas, and facings of yellow satin.
Mrs. Sawtell wore a large velvet hat,
all in black. Miss Maud Hammond,
wbo is one of our brightest and most
charming girls, and whose taste in
dress is perfect, looked unusually well
in a gown of dark red cloth, with
trimmings and facings of the same
beautiful color. A bat of black, with
rosettes of cerise tucked under the
brim, completed this bewitching cuss
tume. '

enough pathos to give the rightful
solemnity. Judge Daniel expressed
his thanks for the great honor done

Stealing; to Suataln Life.
Should a starving man and a woman be
convicted of theft for taking bread when
Mis to save their life? This question is
wing keenly discussed In the French
frew. The court at Chateah-Thierry ac
quitted a woman wbo stole bread for her
mother and child, who had been without
food for 80 hours, and an appeal has been
lodged on behalf of the government. It Is
argued that such an act Is not theft ac
cording to French law. The medlvval law
did not consider it a crime; the criminal
code of Charles V expressly excluded it,
and Diderot and the other encyclopedists
in the encyclopedia published in 1765 said,
“Any one who takes from necessity and
solely to prevent death from starvation
does not commit the crime of theft.”—

Kia Two Texts. .
The Troy Times says that when the cor
poration of Yale college was considering
the question of a president, some 12 years
ago, Dr. Timothy Dwight, who was then
a professor in the Yale Divinity school, in
speaking of the suggestion of his own,
name for the position said to his class
that he' had in mind two texts to apply to
the result. In case the choice fell on some
other man than himself, then he would
say with Paul, in Hebrews xiii, 28, “Know
ye that our brother Timothy is set at lib
erty.” Should he be selected, then he
would try to carry out the injunction in I
Timothy iv, 12, “Let no man despise thy
youth.”
