Official Paper of the Ordinary
ts Spalding county and the City
if Griffin.
Meriwether county stands head in a
matrimonial point ol view. Since the
first of last January one hundred and
forty-seven couples have been married.
The Montesama Record thus views
tbe rise io cotton prices: "The advan
ces in tbe prices of cotton has come
too late to do the farmers much good,
and it may do some of them a great
deal ol barm, by inducing them to
plant another big crop next year.”
"There is not only a good living,
but money, in farmingin Ware county,
outside of cotton," says tbe Waycross
Herald. Tbe same is true of almost
. every section of Georgia, and tbe
farmers generally are now fully con
vinced that there is no longer any
money In vaising cotton.
It is ol interest to know how tbe
leading public men, aa well as the
newspapers, regard Mr. Bryan’s re
cently sounded note of warning
against imperialism. The Washing
ton correspondent of tbe New York
Herald says that among the public
monos that city “Mr. Bryan’s inter
view will be politicians
as bio bid for tbs Presidential nomina
tion of the Democratic party in 1900.”
It is pretty bard to tell what a petty
jury, or estate legislature will do;
nevertheless the Philadelphia Record
thinks that tbe postponing of tbe case
against Senator Quay will cause tbe
Pennsylvania Legislature to reject
him as a senator. The Record says:
"Senator Quay needed an acquital at
tbe bands of a jury as a preliminary
to legislative indorsement. Tbe de
lay of bis trial has cut bim off from
the opportunity.”
Tbe anti scalping bill which has
passed the bouse of representatives re
quires all ticket agents to show proper
authority for, tbe sale ol tickets, re
stricts railway officials from supplying
tickets for sale to any other than au
thorised agents, and makes the redemp
lion of unused or partly used tickets
compulsory. These requirements are
supplemented by adequate penalties
for non-compliance. The failure of
railroad officials to redeem tickets is
made a misdemeanor, punishable by
fine and imprisonment. This bill is
so framed as to meet tbe views ot trans
portation companies and at the same
tune protect tbe ticket bolder.
Col. Bryan may find himself in the
thick of a political fight upon hit re
turn to Nebraska. The legislature of
that elate is to elect a successor to
Senator Allen. The Republicans have
a majority of seventeen on joint bal
lot, and be depended
typop to qlect a senator, But it occurs
that the Republicans cannot agree up
on a man. In this situation it is just
probable that Col. Bryan’s return to
J?inqoln will have considerable bearing
upon the situation. The state is be
lieved, to be not favorably disposed to
wards imperialism. Col Bryan’s re
cent clear aud concise statement re
specting that subject may put him in
to the lists for the senatorship, with a
good chance of winning—Savannah

BUTTBIUPERIOR COURT-
Items From the Prosperous Little
City of Jackson.
The Superior court of Butts county
was held In the new conrt boose last
week Before the conn began its see
•ion, the Christian people asked that
their new building be dedicated by
religious services, to which Judge
Reagan readily assented. -
Judge Carmichael, tbo Chairman of
Board appointed to superintend the
erection of tbe court house, made hi*
report to tbe people, which was well
aud cordially received. Everything
that Judge Carmichael does is always
done in a correct and bt.s otes-like
manner. He and hie able assistant*
did well in this matter. R*v. Mr.
Nelson read the scriptures beginning:
"Except the lord build the house they
labor io vain who built it," etc. Rev.
Dr. Wynn, the Methodist minister, led
tn a beautiful and appropriate prayen
after which Judge Reagan and Col. A.
Y. Wright and Dr Mays made appro
piiate addresses.
The court house is a beautiful
structure coating about $30,000. It is
tbe best arranged court house in the
circuit, and is by far the best seated,
having nice opera chair* instead of
benches.
The building ia healed by steam
which i* far superior to hot air, and
much more cleanly.
THE COURT TRIALS.
> Four murder cases and many other
cases were tried, and strange tossy not
a single defendant was turned loos*.
All were negroes except two white
men for gaming and one for selling
liquor. In days gone by Butts coun*
ty bad many while criminals, hut un
der the benign influence of prohibi
tion, the. white people have moved up
to higher and nobler destiny. The
poor fellow caught violating a law his
own friends and neighbors enacted for
the protection ol thei” homes felt
cheap and lonely, but we trust will be
wiser and belter.
Col. Pliney Hall made quite a repu
tation in one of tbe murder trials and
Griffin may well be pioud of bim.
’ Judge Reagan makes a magnificent
judge. Everybody says he is another
Boynton, and that is saying a grea;
deal.
THE GRIFFIN COLONY.
There are about thirty Griffiniles in
Jackson. It would take up your pa
per to tell of all of these
Walter Harris has a fine drug store,
and Joe Leach a fine furniture estab
lishment. Both are doing well.
Bill Brown and Harold Griffin are
getting “fat’’ and are universally be
loved. All the others are doing well
- NEWSPAPERDOM.
Our old friend Thaxton ia again at
tbe helm of hie paper, and Col. Parry
Lee runs the other. With such a
team Jackson will never fail to turn
up right.

It has always, held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa

of which are. given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has m this in-1

How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums m cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion .of the I
(Lends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these I
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:

Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2f) per

at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94. . .
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for tbe insurance. . .
Mr. Mark Banka was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings

power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by the result oi
his method of investment —a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
