PHYSICAL TRAINING.
Its Talww aa a Preventive aa« Care
•< PwUaoaavy Dleoaees.
Dr. E. Fletcher Ingals of in
• paper with this title, said tbat the
absence of systematic study by physi
cians and the very meager literature
compelled him to be somewhat dogmatic
in hie paper. One of the most common
observations made by medical men, he
said, was that the long, narrow, flat
cheated Individual was the one liable to
tbe development of tuberculosis and
that in patients presenting this form of
chest the chances for recovery were re
duced to a minimum.
This observation be considered suffi
cient to suggest that systematic physical
training in aiding tbe development of
tbe respiratory muscles, thoracic walls
and pulmonary capacity would be of
great service in preventing tuberculosis
and in curing its early stages. Collapsed
air cells, be said, furnished a most fa
vorable nidus for the development of
tuberculosis. Therefore for the preven
tion of tbe disease measures should be
adopted to expand tbe lungs and bring
tbe air cells into the best possible work
ing condition.
He thought it probable that in most
cases there was an early tuberculous
localised anaemia, diminishing the nutri
tion of the parts and making them more
susceptible to the tubercle bacilli and
their toxins. Os the large percentage of
the human family said to be affected by
tuberculosis (80 per cent), the majority
recovered, even when the disease affect
ed the lungs, it not proving fatal in
more than 13 per cent
He stated tbat in most of those who
recovered the disease had made but lit
tle progress, and that it was only at.
autopsy after death from other causes
that its presence was detected, in view
at which it was the physician’s duty to
recommend measures likely to strength
en the resisting power of the lungs.
The beneficial influence of a high alti
tude he considered probably due to the
increased distension of the air vessels,
and that as a means of prophylaxis the
first measure should be to teach the pa
tient to breathe deeply.
Careful physical training, be said, ’
was of the greatest importance, it being
possible for the long, narrow, flat chest
ed to increase the expansion of the chest
two or three inches, improve the form
and increase the circumference. He be
lieved it possible by physical develop
ment to check the process of tuberculosis
when it had become established in the
chest and to promote recovery.—Med

MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It Eas always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the. particulars
of which are given here, showe that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
Mr. Banka was insured for , 15’222 22
The dividends amounted to ..12,02c.w
Paid to the estate $17,028.00
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. 1,233. Issued March 5,1845. Amount ♦ s > ooo '
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plan.
Original insurance in 1845,
Dividend additions paid in 12,028.00
Amount of death claim
54 Premiums paid by insured 8,640.00
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8,388.00
Being nearly equal to a return of alf the premiums paid with two and a halt (2J) per
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from $5,009
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94.- '
The dividend additions paid to the estate werel39 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance. W
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety»>four. He appreciated the
Eower of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by the result o:
is method of investment—a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
