SCHLEY SPLITS HER TICKET,
At the election of delegates to
the Slate convention, in Schley
county, yesterday, two Haeon del
egates and one Stephens delegate
were elected. There was a very
small turn out.
SCMTEIt FOR STEPHENS.
Tho primary elections,yesterday
at the different preeivets for dele
gates to the county convention,
passed oil quietly and a light vote
wnM polled. Willie we have not
heard from every prcoinct, enough
is known to say that a solid Steph
ens delegation will lie sent from
this county.
The majority rule was almost
unanimously endorsed.
DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY.
Pursuant toa call of the Democrat
ic Kxccutive Committee, tho Dem
ocracy of the 27tli District met in
the court house at 10 o’clock n. m.
Col. A. S. Cutts, Chairman of ex
ecutive committee stated the object
of the meeting to be to elect live
delegates to represent this District
in the county convention that will
meet Tuesday to select delegates,
to represent Sumter comity in the
Gubernatorial Convention, and to
express opinion on the majority
anil two-thirds rules.
Allen Fort, Ksq., was called to
the chair, ami 11. L. Oliver, fcsq., vons ness.
requested to act as secretary.
The following resolutions were
adopted:
Resolved, that the convention
proceed liy ballot to ideal live dele
gates to represent this district in
tbe county convention next Tues
day, and that polls remain open
until 2 o’clock p. in., at which time
the convention luasscmhlc nml
count the votes and declare the re
sult.
Resolved further, tlmt the clmir-
of the sea Hold.' There was a slight
delay whoc a crowd of 250 or more
spectators pushing and jostling
through the door leading from the
rotunda and corridor, at the lower
end ol which the gallows was
placed.
ON TIIE TRAC,
Gil teau, meanwhile, gazed upon
the ciowj^ looked tipwurd at Hie
beam over his head, and quickly
made it survey of nil the dread pa-
ruphernalia. As soon as the crowd
had gained access General Crocker
waved to them to uncover and all
heads were bared. Dr. Hicks made
an invocation in these words:
“Father, out of the depths we cry
f° Thee; hear Thou our sup
plication, for the sake of Jcsii3
Christ, our Savior, who lias made
a full propitiation for ns. Heboid
this, Thy servant. We humbly
pray that TIioii will he present at
this supreme moment of his life.
Let Thy light descend upon him ;

ness. Deliver him and us. Oh.
God! have mercy on us; Christ,
have mercy on us ; Lamb of God
that taketh away the sins of the
world have mercy on us. A men
and amen."
THE DEMEANOR OF TIIE CULPRIT.
During the prayer Guiteau stood
with bowed head. At its conclu
sion Dr. flicks opened the Iliblc,
and Guiteau, in firm tones, said :
“I will read a selection from the
tenth chapter of Matthew, from
the 28th to the 41st verse inclu
sive.” He then read in a clear,
strong voice, and with good intona
tion, showing little, if any, nor-

lie then read in a loud tone and
with distinct and deliberate cmplia-
sio the following: “My dying
prayer on the gallows: ‘ Father,
now I go to Thee and the Savior.
I have finished the work Thougav-
esl me to do, and I am only too
happy to go to Tlieo. Tho world
does not yet appreciate my mis*
sion, but Thou knowest it. Thou
knowest Thou didst inspire Gar-

IILESSEII RY HICKS. '
Rev. Hicks gave to Guiteau his
final benediction and farewell, say
ing: “God, the Father, he witl^
thee, and give tlice peace forever
more.” The attendants then pin
ioned his legs, placed the noose
over his head and carefully adjus
ted it about his neck. Mr. Strong
placed the black cap over his I ead.
Into eternity.
As be did so Guiteau called out j
in loud tones: “Glory, glory, !
glory!” Instantly the spring was*
touched, the drop fell at 12:411 p.
m., and Guiteau swung in tlie air.
The body turned partly around,
Imt there was not tlie slightest
preceptible movement of tbcjjimbs
or any evidence of conscious efiort
to move them.
A YELL SENT UP.
When the drop fell, » yell was
sent up by some persons inside the
jail. This echoed outside by the
voices ol|a thousand or more peo
ple, who hurrahed lustily. There
was a general onslaught by the
populace upon the door, which
was so powerful that the officers
were unable to withstand it. Hun
dreds of people crowded in the
nfficeand there was a terrible crash !
at the doors.
THE 1I0IIY LOWERED.
For at least forty seconds after j
i lie drop fell the body hung motion- j
less, then there wasa slight motion
of the shoulders and legs due to
muscular contraction. Three min
utes alter the trap fell, the body
was lowered to be examined by tlie
physicians. There was a decided
action of the heart for fully four
teen minutes, and tlie pulse flutter
ed two minutes longer. When the
body had hung with tlie feet just
touching tlie ground lor over half
an hour, it was lowered into the
coffin, which was waiting for it
under the scaffold. The physicians
decided at onco that the neck
had been broken.
THE 110IIY REMOVED.
At 1:4U p. m. the lid of tlie coffin
was put in its place, and tlie body
was borne to the jail chapel, where
: he physicians who were to make
l he autopsy were assembled.
Guiteau just before the trap was
sprung, dropped a piece of paper
from his hand. The paper was
given him by Warden Crocker to
he dropped by tlie condemned man
us a signal tlmt lie was ready.
The Difference.
Said Grant in Warren, Ohio, in
September, 1880 : “The Republi
can party is a party of principles,
the same principles prevailing
wherever it has its foothold.” This
is undoubtedly true. Let us see
what those principles are. Last
April, at a large political meeting
ill I’liiladclpliia, Hon. Wayne Mc-
Veagh. a Republican of recognized
prominence and ability, said, in tlie
course of some remarks: “My par
ty lias three principles, ami I am
earnestly nml vigorously opposed
to every one of them. ’ Its first
principle is the spoils system; I am
opposed to that. Its next princi
ple is the boss system; 1 am oppos
ed to that. Tlie only other princi
ple of tlie party that I can discov
er is the repudiation of the State
debt of Virginia; I am opposed to
tlmt. So 1 am a Republican under
difficulties, and wo are nil of us be
coming so.” The difference be
tween Gen. Grant and Mr. Me-
Venglt is tlmt the General is proud
of those “principles” and McVeagli
is not proud of them.
