Itev. Mr. Twitty preached an ex
cellent sermon at the Methodist
church yesterday morning at 11
o’clock from the text, “You arc
not your own; ye are bought with
a price.” In tho afternoon a meet
ing was held at the church to as
certain wliother the members were
ready for, and willing to aid in, a
revival of religion. After a vote
was taken, it was decided to com
mence last night and continue the
meeting through the week, having
prayer meeting every afternoon at
4 o’clock and preaching at 1. Our
pastor and leading members seem
very much in earnest, and I be
lieve we will have a good and prof
itable meeting. Hope our liaptist
brethren and friends will take an
interest and assist us in tho good
work.
Our friends at Bronwood arc
taking steps to build a Lutlierian
church at that place. We wish
them success in their Iaudiblo en
terprise, and will give them more 1
substantial aid when called upon. '

Secretaiy Gresham will bo at ills
desk in tho Treasury Department
on Monday, returning to-morrow
night from his visit to Secretary
Frelinghnysen'o to see the Presi
dent. Gen. Gresham has not as
yet finally determined how long he
will remain in his present position.
Ho accepted it in good faith as a
permanent appointment. His pres
ent intontion is to remain just
where lie is until March 4 next.
He has not determined to take
Judgo Drummond’s place on the
Circuit bench if it should he offered
to him. It might be accepted as
certain that Qen. Gresham would
remain at the head of tho Treasury
until March 4 were it not for the
fact that some of Ills friends are
urging him earnestly to go on the
bench at once. In this eonneotion

I know my friends and cus

count of moving into my new

by stating that I have bought
a very large stock of goods,
comprising Dry Goods, Furnish

Hats, and in fact everything
pertaining to ladies and gentle
men’s wear. I “struck” in

These goods are of the finest
and best makes, and I will offer
them at prices that will make
you think that I have got them
without buying them at all. I
will take pleasure in showing
and pricing them. Come and

buy or not.
One word to the wise: I
bought these goods to sell, and

the low prices and lay in your |

It is a well-known fact that tbe
men who have been most conspic
uous as evil doors have been noted
for their magnetism. Aaron Burr,
old John Brown, Ben Butler, Bob
Iugcrsoll, Bill Tweed and Star
Route Dorsey, are instances, it
is also equally well-known that
many men ot Hue talent and rigid
honesty have always been charac
terized by a quiet, reserved and
sometimes rcpcllant manner. Mag
netism is recognized by bad men
as a winning card, and they strive
to acquire it. It is always safe to
regard a man with suspicion when
there is more said about bis mag

Mr. Thomas was asked bow lie
liked tbe colitic stone, out of which
the capital is to lie build. “Very
much,” replied be. “Nothingcould
be handsomer. It takes the finest
polish. It involves no experiment.
Wo know absolutely bow it will
stand and bow it will look from
wide experience. Besides the Im
portant buildings enumerated in
your paper this morning as being
built of it, tbero is the Indiana
stale house, the Illinois statu bouse,
tbe Mutual Insurance building of
New York, and Mr. Vanderbilt’s
famous bouse on Fifth avenue.
The stone is all tbat could lie de
sired. Our only regret is tbat it is
not Georgia stone. But tbe great
bulk of tile money will be spent in
Georgia, and wc have n contract

The democrats charge tbat the
republicans o( Maine' purchased
votes right and left. They sup
port their charges with numerous
affidavits of men who were paid
money, and of others who saw
money paid. Ten dollars was tbe
ruling price, though some voters
were beat down to nine or eight
dollars, while others held ont for
eleven and twelve dollars. Names
are published of some 200 men in
Augusta—Blaine’s own town—
who sold their votes. It is a dis
