A Shouting She.
Sunday evening, as n colored
woman named Adalinc Cut?,9 was
returning from church, she began
shouting in lront of the artesian
well, and when in front of Bolton
Bros.’ storo fell on the sidewalk in
a fit, her bead striking against a
door step, rendering her uncon
scious for a time. A large crowd
was attracted, and finally Police
man Wheeler came up, felt of her
pulse, roused her up and asked
what was the matter. She made
some reply that showed she was
inspired by religious enthusiasm,
began shouting again and started
for home.

Whiskey is preferred abovo all other

manufacture of the Harper, the large
capital of the Distiller which enables him
to hold his Whiskey until it has fully ma

the unvarying satisfaction it bas given

In another column wc give space
to the communication from “Ob

now moved iuto its new armory in
the Barlow Block, and intends to
make it ono of the finest in the
State. They are working hard to
build up their company, procure
new uniforms for new members,
anil keep a respectable balance in
the treasury. The members go
down into their own pockets for a
great deal of this outlay, and
would not ask for help could they
avoid it. Unfortunately, the Slate

A. l-l. Fair.
Editor Recorder:—Allow me
.pace, please, in your justly popu
lar daily, to inform your; many
readers of tbe progress that tbe
Fair Committee bare made during
tbe pastGveek, and also to inform
them that tbe manner and means
adopted by tbe committee for con
ducting tbeir Fair is a decided
improvement upon tbe old style.
Many innovations will be intro
duced, and tbe committee are
working bard to make tbe week
! one, not only of proQt to tbe com
pany, but of pleasure and amuse
ment to its patrons. Tbe date for
bolding tbe Fair bos been changed
from tbe 28th to tbe 20tb of Octo
ber on account of tbe original date
conflicting with that of tbo Macon
Fair.
Prof. Pancllo’s band, composed
of four pieces, lias been engaged
for tbe week. Many ol our people,
especially tbe young ladies and
gentlemen, recollect with pleasure
the elegant music tbe professor on
other occasions bas furnished us
with, and are satisfied that the com-
mittce could have made no selec
tion of music that would have
given as much general satisfaction,
Tbe Fair will be open every
evening from six until twelve p. m.
and from eleven to twelve each
night dancing will bo indulged ill.
On the opening night the commit
tee of ladies who have been
working so industriously to raise
money enough with which to pur
chase a flog lor tlie company, I am
pleased to say, have been success-
fill, and will present to tbe compa
ny on that night the handsomest
flag that ever fluttered in tbe
breeze over tbe beads of proud and
brave soldiers in tbe streets of our
beautiful and prosperous city.
Iam informed by one of the
committee that the encouragement
met with from our merchants has
been most satisfactory, and that
through them a large number of
donations bnvc nriived, of which I
attach a very incomplete list be
low, as I do not know the names
of those through whom, nor from
who m, they came, but will furnish
you with a complete one in a few
days. From Messrs. Jacob Reed’s
Sons, Philadelphia, and through
Mr. S. C. Cooper, a handsome suit
of clothes. From Elias Heiman,
Atlanta, through Messrs. J. W.
Harris A Co., 1 pony plow. From
Messrs. A. Levy A Bro., New
York, through Messrs. J. Waxel-

delphia, one handsome silk um

Day of Atonement.
Monday was the Jewish holiday
known aetheDay of Atonement,
whieh ie religiously observed by
tbe Hebrew* everywhere. This ie
one of the most solemn of all tbe
days kept sacred by the Jews, it
it the tenth day of the seventh
month, closing tbe ten penitential
days. It is ordained in the law as
written in Leviticns, sixteenth
chapter from the 29th to the 31st
verses; in the twenty-third chapter
of the same book, and in the twe».
ty-fourth chapter of Numbers. Tbe
form of worship on this day in the
time of Moses was an annual repe
tition of the service of the dedica
tion of tbe “sanctum sanctorum”
by Aaron, tbe first high priest in
Israel. After the destruction ot
the altar the form of worship was
preserved without sacrifices, to
which was added the reminiscences
from tbe temple and the narrative
of the sacrifices thereof. Later
when the poets began to enrich
tbe literature of the synagogue
various scieotionB from sacred po
ems were added to the form of
worship. The forms of worship
now used in modern temples, of
whieh tbe Hamburg ritual is tbe
oldest, date from and after 1855.
No day exercised such universal
influence on the house of Israel as
this and it has lost nothing of its
sanctity by the progress and
changes of the ages. It is regard
ed to-day with the same reverence
and awe as in tbo days of yore.
As the day approaches pious Jews
seek to do benevolent acts in order
to send pleading angels before
them to the throne of glory. The
day calls them out of the narrow
sphere of selfishness to tho broad
plain of humanitarian principle.
