According to the' recent statin- tics, there ban been a great increase in the consumption of liquor in the United States, and one (nr out stripping the growth of population. In 1810 the number of gallons of liquor consumed was 71,000,000, and bow the number bas gone np since is shown in the following figures: 1850, 91,000,000 gsllnns; I860. 202,000.000; 1870. 293,000,- 000; 1880, 500,000,000; 1883, 055,- 009.000. That is, while the popu lation has trebled during the last forty yean, the consumption of liquor has increased by almost i len-lold, and the amount of money , expended in its purchase shows a | still greater proportional increase. The annual expenditure for liquor ! in the United Stalea now exceeds ; $goo, ooo.ooo j The New Orleans Tunes Demo- jurat says: “Fellow citizens and | fellow voters of the North, do not gel unduly excited about the mat- ter of armed Federal interference with your elections. What tbey will entertain you with an Novem ber lilt will he but a pleasant holi day compared to what the South suffered fur eiglit long years* You must not roar ho loudly at the prick of a pin, when your country men in the South so long and so palicntly endured the constant prod of bayonets.” Fortune nlnyH some men strange tricks. On Wednesday Charles Bertram was arraigned before a New York magistrate on the charge of forgery. Not long ago this man was a ricli banker of Prussia, and was well known in the financial circles of Berlin. In these days of speculation the rond from palace to prison is short. EARTHQUAKE ft ffirc Ton an lira cfW&atffis Been DUTY OF DEMOCRATS. Tbs near approach of the Na tlonal election ahould aronse Demo, crata to the importance of taking such measures as wilt insure s full vote. Tbo casting of a ballot is not only tbo highest privilege of a oitixen, but it is his highest duty— a duty he owes to Ills government, which protects him in his rights, and a duty he owes to his leilow- citizens in siding them to select faithful and efficient officers. Because Georgia is reasonable sure to cast its electoral vote for the Democratic candidates is no reason why Georgia Democrata should not every one go to the polls snd deposit their ballots for the candidates of their choice. It should be remembered that it was by thus unitedly casting their bal lots tliut Georgia was redeemed from Radical misrule, and in that way only can the power thus wrested from onr political enemies be preserved. It is a duty that Georgia Democrats owe to their brethren in other portions of the Union to poll as full a vote as pos sible and thus cncourago and sus. tain the Democratic brcthicn in State* who are struggling so nobly, under adverse eircumstancea, to secure the triumph of Democratic principles. There is yet s m ore forcible rea son why the Democrats of this congressional district should all turn out next Tuesday, and that is that there is a contest as to wheth er n Democrat or a Republican shall be sent to Congress to repre sent this district. No one believes that* Republican would properly represent the opinions and intci- csla of the people of this district, beesuse he must be elected by the votes of that class who havo but little interest in the prosperity of tko country—a class which lias little pro|>crty at slake, and hut a poor idea of what constitutes good government. If the meu who have most at slake, who desire to sec the wealth, enterprise and intelli gence of the district properly rep resented, do not take the proper means to secure that representa tion by attending the polls next Tuesday, they can have no one but themselves to blsme. It is idle to talk that there is no danger, when there is a candidate in the livid who is hacked by the money and influence of the Republicans of Washington City, and who is using every means to secure Ids election. There is but one safe course for Democrats to pursue, and that is, j ifl . _ _ _ , ... , , ini initoui to g«i it lo sell os mmiaiisioa. 1 cab to VOIS And use Luetr influence ' rvotwwmand »« b*»o«d anjr trmrdiss I hara nsr _ , „ i u*#d fur T*tt*r. Specially was this true of many large and celebrated nothing manufacturers who had mede up numerous stocks from materi als bought ou credit. These manufacturers placed their faith on lively and profitable September trade, absolutely relying on it for funds to meet their maturing paper, which they had given for piece goods, but the trade did not come, the continuous warm weather and no customers cooked their “goose,” and there was nothing left for them to do but to fail and turn their goods over to an Assignee. It was bad for th» m, but it is in your power to make it good for you, for, ns usual, when good goods are to he sacrificed we nro always on hand.
