WASHINGTON MONUMENT.
T |,e cost, Appearance and Construe-
■Ion-In the Elevator,
[tieorge Alfred Townsend.]
It is a majestic thing to stand below
sml look upon this wondorful shaft,
tthi’-h has, even at tho lop, the extent
„( .. considerable house, and at tho base
to I think, sixty foot square. It has
rntt about $1100,000, but more
tiuui a fifth of tliis was spent
fixing tho 0,11 foundations, so
u to render it sure tiiat tho
weight of the shaft could ho supported,
due almost regrets to seo this monu
ment finished whon ho thinks of the
musical clatter made by tho innumera
ble workmen with their wooden mallets
and colli chisels cutting away at the
sionc. Tho "Anvil Chorus” was hardly
more pleasing io tho oar. The monu
ment is not situated on very high ground.
It is probably not more than forty or
fifty feet above the tide. But it is in
the very eye of Washington, inclosed by
all the hills, and there are some boauti-
tjful elfects from this noblo shaft, which
i,. I think, over 500 feet high.
As you go into Washington from the
north yon can seo this shaft, now rising
behind tho capitol, which is on a hill,
and tho monument is about a mile
further off. Yet tho shaft clearly rises
to the eye nbovo tho dome of tho capitol
when tlio passenger is some two miles off
from tho dome. Tho shaft is seen to
move nearer and nearer tho dome, and
Busily stands right behind it, like a tall
man looking down on a kite. Slowly the
shaft passos oil to tho loft,
and seems to In) working through
the sir. It is nil made of
a very nice quality of American mar
ble from a little way out of Baltimore.
This monument marks rathor a new
era in the building of great shafts. No
ether shaft now existing that I
lnow of was constructed by tho aid of
steam. When this monument was be
gun die work of building it was either
done by hand or by some Small hoisting
engine. The stones when put into the
base of tho monument wore very irregu
lar in size, and that part of tho work
which proceeded somewhere between
1(110 and 1855 is tho worst portion of
the monument. *
When the work was taken up by a
direct government appropriation the larg
est and licst elevator was immediately
purchased and sot up in tho center of
tho monument, whore it is to remain
perpetually and carry up passengers.
Tins elevator runs between trussed iron
uprights, nil open, leaving a frightful
chasm between tho open elevator and
liic sides of tho monument. As you go
up higher nud higher, and begin to real
ize the stupendous descent in ease of an
accident, a fooling very liko hor
ror occurs to oven a courageous
man. The elevator seems to grow
small and lean. Tho supports at tho
comers looks liko straws. It goes up
rather slowly, carrying tho proeligious
stone, generally about sixteen feet long
by eight feet thick nnd wide, and when
the top is reached there are fbur cranes
of iron which seem to havo tho sagacity
of tho human hand. Thoy roach for
that stone as a blind man finds his
oread on tho taldo. When thoy take
hold of It, in a perfectly noiseless way,
11 is lifted up into tho nir and brought
down, and tlion tho crane seems to feel
for the snot in tho wet hydraulic cement
where the stone is filially dispo-eil al
most without the intervention of human
wings. In this way tho monument lny
literally walked into tho air.
llow Tobacco la Burnt.
[Exchange.]
Tobaeco raisers and producers of other
plants whose dried and curled leaves are
of valuo in tbo market, will bo inter
ested in tho latest explanation of the
causo of tho brown discolorations—
sjxds of small diameter, in which tho
tissue is nearly destroyed—that so often
impair the valuo of their products. It
•ppean that rain drops, aftor a shower
of a hot summer day, act as condensing
prisms to the nearly vertical beams of
the sun, concentrating tho ray upon the
surface of tho leaf just beneath tho cen
ter of tho drop, and thus producing a
Burnt spot of diameter corresponding
*uh that of tho drop itself and of depth
