Americas is th3 county seat of Sumter
• ,v Georgi'. t-itiiiittil <>u tlu- South-
Milroa.l, 71 mil. a southwest of
Macon, and about 80 miles north of the
Florida line. It is situated in the finest
H ecti-»n of Georgia, ruining a grtatei vari
ety of agricultural and horticultural pro
ducts than any other part of the South,
combining all the fruits, grain and vege
tables of tie temperate hqcI semi-tropical
roues—wheat, corn, rye, oats, rice, Irish
and sweet potatoes, peanuts, ohufas,
cotton peas, sugar cane, apples, pears,
peaches, grapes, plums and other fruits.
The climate is mild and equable, and one
of the most healthv iu the world, the air
being pure and i iryWnd most beneficial tor
lung and throat diseases. All kinds of
outdoor work cau be performed without
inconvenience from summer heat or
winter cold. Americus has a population
of 6,000, is beautifully situ«ted ou high
and rolling grouud and toasts of some of
the handsomest business blocks in the
South. The city has tine public schools;
good churches; a largo public library;
one daily, one semi-weekly and two
weekly newspapers; a new opeia house,
completely furnished wit.i scenery and
capable of seating 1 .IKK) persons; a well
orgmized fire department, including
two fine steamers; the streets are well
paved, sewered and lighted; there are
two Houring mills, a cottonseed oil mill,
planing mill and variety works, carriage
factory, and a number of minor manfaclo-
ries; about two hundred linns are engaged
in mercantile business; three banks with
hi) abundance of capital; two good
hotels turuish good ucoommodnttion.
Americus is the cpntre of trade for six
counties comprifdug the richest agricul
tural section in Georgia, the average ou-
nual cotton receipts being 50,000 bales,
which will bo largely increased by the
completion of the Preston and Lumpkin
railroad now in process of construction.
It is the largest city in Southwest Geor
gia, and has been appropriately named
the “Commercial Capital” of that sec
tion, and it is rapidly growing iu popu
lation ami wealth. As a place of busi
ness residence it presents attractions
equaled by few cities iu the houth.
Property of all kinds is comparatively
cheap, although rapidly advancing in
value: the inhabitants of both city and
country are cultivated, courteous and
hospitable, with a cordial welcome to im
migrants. To enterprfsing tradesmen, ju
dicious capitalists and industrious farm
ers tLis section of Georgia offers fine op-
portuni'ies. Any information in regard
to city or country will be cheerfully fur

corder. Americus, Ga.

Judge Estes, of the Northeastern
Circuit, granted a temporary res
training order in behalf of the
bondholders of the East Tennessee,
Virginia and Georgia Railroad
against the property of the compa
ny in this State, and appointed
Gen. E. I’. Alexander and Rufus
T. Dorsey receivers of the Georgia
di\ision of the system. The ap
pointees have signitlcd their iuten
tion of assuming the dutiesoftheir
ofliee. The order was procured at
Gainesville, and the application for
permanent receivers of the division
will be heard by Judge William R.
Hammond, of the Atlanta circuit,
on .Ian. 15. The Georgia division
consists ot about 450 miles of track
in good condition, supplied with a
sufficiency of rolling stock. The
appointment of the receivers creates
an unusual stir in railroad circles
to night, particularly in view ofthe
fact that Henry Fink has already
been appointed receiver of the en
tire system. Mr. Alexander is
in New York and Mr. Dorsey is

amounts to $234,000. Of this sum
about $170,000 will he paid in

Whcu the Januaiy interest is paid
the Georgia Treasury will need a
good deal of bracing up. The
next big pull at it will be defray

While it is not knows how long

The improvement of Flint river
is s matter of great importance to
Albany and this section. Albany
needs increased transportation fa
cilities. 8he needs just that sort
of competition between carriers
which s line of boats on tbe Fiiat
river would give her.
The Flint river, at present, is
ornamental rather than useful. If
properly utilized, it will become
tbe source of vast material advan
tage to the business interests of
Albany. Business men, whose in
terests are located here, should see
to it that the river is utilized as an
artery of trade.
It is generally believed that ail
extra session of Congress will be
called on tbe 5th of March to give
the Senate an opportunity of con
firming appointment* to Mr. Cleve
land's Cabinet and other prominent
oflicials. It is not likely there will
he an extra session, which can only
be called in two ways. The pres
ent Congress could do it under the
constitutional provision that “Con
gress shall meet on tho first Mon
day in December, unless it appoint
a different day;” or it could be con
veiled by proclamation of Mr.
Cleveland after his inauguration
as was done by Mr. Lincoln. The
custom has been, however, for the
outgoing President to issue a proc
lamation about the first of March,
convening the Senate in executive
session for the purpose of confirm
ing the appointments of the new
administration.
