will be furnished by the company
to carry the bell and three ollleers
appointed bv the Mayor as custo

the city in June, at the close of the
Exposition. This special train will

SMALL COTTON FACTORIES.
There is in Columbia, S. C., a
cotton factory that employs only
seven operatives ami declared last
year a dividend of 40 per cent.
This is probably the smallest cot
ton factory in the world, but no
large ones are able to realize such
a rale of prolit. If it can be de
monstrated that small cotton
factories can be prolitably man
aged, an important problem will
lie solved in at least one textile in
dustry. YY’orkingmen who find it
impossible to obtain means to es
tablish a large factory coul 1 ope
rate in sma'.l factories requiring
few hands The profits in the
amall factories would have a large
influence on the rates of wages, not
only in the cotton manufacture, but
in kindred branches of industry.
YVilh workingmen owning and !
managing innumerable small facto-
tories, it would be out of the pow- 1
erof monopoly to combine for con
trolling rates of wages. «One swal
low does not make a summer, but
the experiment is worth imitating.
None ought to know better than
intelligent operatives in cotton fac
tories whether it will succeed. The
tendency fora long time has liccn
to the accumulation of large
amounts of capital in great manu
facturing operations; but a healthy
reaction which would give work
ingmen a larger share in the pro
duction would be offered.
