WEDNESDAY. MARCH IS, 'M.
The contest for United States
Senator in Arkansas, to succeed
Senator Garland, bids lair to be a
lively one.
Attorney General George Gray
has been nominated by the Demo
crats as successor to Bayard from
Delaware.
The fact that three members of
the new Cabinet are named William
has led a curious newspaper man
to look up the Williams in all the
Cabinets ever made in the nation
Among his discoveries was that
the Interior Department is the only
one which has never been presided
over by a William.
The President has nominated
Joseph S. Miller,ol West Virginia,
as commissioner of internal reve
nue. We are glad to sec Phil.
Thompson, of Kentucky, left out,
as he is too closely connected with
the whiskey ring. Mr. Cleveland
is evidently determined upon hav
ing a clean administration.
Capt. J. U. Howell, a Republi
can member of congress from Illi
nois, in a newspaper interview
speaks hirlily of President Cleve
land, although not favorably im
pressed with the members of the
cabinet. He thinks our old friend
and former Democratic congress
man, Hon. A. E. Stevenson, stands
a fair chance lor the position of
second assistant postmaster gen
eral.
The Clinton (111.) Public, a
strong Republican paper, edited
by a postmaster, says: “President
Cleveland started out right in mak
ing appointments when he called
Gen. John C. Black, of Danville,
to the management of the pension
office. General Black is one of the
purest and ablest Democrats in
Illinois, and as he was a gallant
soldier during the war the old sol
diers feel that in him they have a
friend to pass upon the merits of
their claims in the pension depart
ment."
One of the most interesting ex
hibits at the New Orleans Exposi
tion, is a model ol the Eads Ship
Railway, proposed to be built over
the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to
connect the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans. The model is said to have
cost $10,000, and to be a beautiful
piece of workmanship. It is, on
a small scale, a perfect representa
tion of the ship railway, and every
feature of that enterprise will be
so clearly shown that its operations
can be easily understood. This
mainiature railway will be shown
at ths Mexican exhibit.
LULU HUKST’S MiUXKTlSa.
The Macon Telegraph and Mes
senger gets off the following good
one on Lulu Hurst’s magnetism :
The other day Miss Lulu Hurst
was on Conductor Allie Shellmau’s
train and on the train was a roan
who had attended Miss Lulu's per
formance in Eufaula the night be
fore, and who was exceedingly
skeptical. He said he was satisfied
that the secret «f her performances
was simply muscular power and
that she was fortunate enough to
possess just a little more muscular
strength than an ordinary man. As
none of his fellow passengers were
able to give auy lucid explanation
of the wonderful Georgia girl's
powers, the Eulaula man had the
best of the argument until Conduc
tor Bhellmau came along. The
subject was again brought up, and
the clever prince of the bell line
said :
“I can prove to you beyond all
question that it is not muscular
power, but personal magnetism."
“Personal magnetism lie Mow
ed,” remarked the Eufaula man.
“Well,” continued the conduc
tor, “we are now climbing the hill
at Hatcher's Station, the steepest
grade on the road. Just before we
reached the hill I told the engineer
to shut off a>l steam and reverse
his engine. I then requested Miss :
Lulu to place her bands or. the
seat in front of her. She did so.
and she is carrying us up the hill I
as well as the engine could. Come j
back and see for yourself.”
The Eufaula man never doubted j
wbat the conductor said, but it j
was a long time before he could 1
make out what personal magnet- j
Ism really meant. He wss silent 1
all the way to Macon, and wore the j
air of a man who had got the worst
of an argument aad was convinced

Mrs. J. Lucas, of Philadelphia,!
has been appointed by Commission-j
er Loring superintendent of tbe !
silk experimenting station, at a
salary of $100 per month. She is
also authorized to expend $2,500 j
upon vouchers certified by herself, j
Mrs. L ucas, at a meeting of the as- ,
sociation in Philadelphia,Thursday
added her salary to the government
donation, thus making the amount i
$3,700. The association has 4,000 i
pounds of silk on hand, and will
'nave it prepared for market at once.
The association has 20,000 corrcs- i
pondents.
The money editor of the New
York Herald says the Southern
railroads are getting the attention (
of capitalists. They are considered j
more promising than the roads that 1
are fully developed.
