Wonderful Above Ills Kind.
[Norwich Bulletin.)
The venerable pastor of Putnam, the
,, v Father Vygen, owens a parrot
‘',,,'-1, i s a linguist-, musician, telephone
,„,r«tcir. gymnast and contortionist,
•I-L bird will speak Irish, Hutch, Eug
, h and French and learn a lesson in
‘' v ,‘,f them with remarkable facility.
Music charms him. lie frequently es-
„. iVS to sing and reproduces so well the
.Coiind of the human voice thill one can
I,.11 whose voice lie imitates. His voice
ni | humor arc the best gen-
;, r .,l| v hi the morning. He
niiniics tlie domestic animals
canarv bird, cat and rooster—
whistles’ for the little poodle and kindly
, alN the Newfoundland dog by a pet
name. The names of the household
members are often on his tongue. His
friendship is perpetually particular for
a certain individual and his fits of re-
i ic'e very violent in self-defense, lie
,'oimnands, exhorts and denounces as if
endowed with human intelligence; has
, somewhat regular hour for retiring,
manifesting his desire therefor by a
-creecli of impatience. He undertakes
to advise children regarding the pro-
1,riely of going to school and using a
handkerchief when necessary. If the
indolent youngsters were as assiduous
in their applications as this parrot they
would he bright scholars.
Although he seemingly distinguishes
where there is a difference in rank he
has very little reverence for the most
distinguished in church or state utid
naturally has no "human respect.” At
nines In! assumes a meditative mein, #s-
l»-i tally after active and talkative
scenes.' Ho takes great* delight in
whistling the raise-up-the-curtain and
hurry-up with-the-play gamut, common
in opera houses and halls; apparently
knows good from evil and is quick to
de, hire that that quality exists in cer
ium things. He puts a period to any
current nonsense by his imperative
■slop;” appreciates the physiological
benefit of a hearty laugh when in the
,c,per mood, holds prolonged conversa-
iious by telephone and otherwise mani-
i-sfs a love for the so-called almighty
lollar on meet occasions* The bird is
vonderful above his kind..

|Count tPHeriaou** Book.)
In going through the private apart
ments of the palace the count noticed
that there was a dumb waiter or elevn
tor which placed the bedroom of tho
impress in communication with the
tloor above. “The maid, who was my
guide.” says the author, “gave me the
following explanation of the use of the
mechanical contrivance. Above the
apartment of the empress, on the third
tloor of the palace, was a series of room*
occupied by the women in waiting and
tilled with large oak wardrobes, in
which were dresses of all sorts, cloaks,
skirts, body linen, laces, piece goods,
and rolls of silk. There was one room
lor tin* hats, another for the shoes and
a third for the furs; in one word it was
a completely equipped female arsenal,
intended for the use of a sovereign who
was a pretty woman and who knew how
to resort to tho embellishments of art
to heighten her beauty.
“In the room immediately above her
N-d room and communicating with it by
mrans of the lift were four mannequins
•t the exact si/e and shape of her nm
i sty. When the dame ‘d'Atour.V had
transmitted her orders through the
-peaking tube, the dressing maids took
trorn the wardrobe all that was needed
f«»r the toilette indicated, dressed upone
o! the lay figures, placed it on the lift
and sent it down to the bed-room, so
— that the empress could see for herself
in-t how she would look when dressed.
It she was satisfied the mannequin was
mnpp<d and sent up to the third floor
I he author describes the wardrobe he
‘ ol, i l< l *d the Tuileries as being of the
most complete and sumptuous character.
Mm furs alone were worth $120,000, and
!"‘ '‘stimales the totrtl value at $800,000.
II"-city of Paris refused to pay for the
packing and transportation, and as no
"i" would advance the money he did so
hnnself The cases and their contents
r-ached the ex-empress safely. After
waiting ten years for some acknowlcdg-
,nH,t **‘nt her his bill for tho ex-
Ikmincs incurred. The only reply was a
• nek fur the exact amount.
