From the Savannah Newt
The railroad commission lias de
cided that the Central canuot be re
quired to deliver cotton to tho com
press at Americus, aud the begin
ning of thqpnpleasantneas between
the Savannah, Americus and Mont
gomery road and the Central is
likely to gather volume rather than
to diminish. The retaliation of the
Central was severe, aud the tight
was short, sharp, and decisive, the
Central coming out with flying
colors.
KETl'KN OF COUNSELOR LAWTON.
Mr. A. R. Lawton, Jr., returned
from Atlanta yesterday morning,
where lie represented the Central
railroad in thy argument before
the state railroad commission upon
the coinpUiut tuade against the
Central by the Americus, Preston
aud I.mnpkin railroad, becauso of
the Central's refusal to continue to
deliver cotton to the compress.
The Coutral now delivers the cot
ton at its own yard, which puts the
compress company to the expense
of drayage across the town.
After hearing arguments Uom
both sides the commission lecided
in favor of the Central.
THE DRAYAGE INDUSTRY,
This will probably put a stop to
the shipping of cotton from points
along the Central's line via Ameri
cus to HavaniiAh, to be compressed
at Americus, as tho freight rates by
this route aro several eehts higher
per bale than from the same points
by tho Central's line direct to Ha
vannali.
The rebate for compressing given
by the Americus compress has
heretofore overbalanced the difler-
ence in freights rates, but tho cost
lu drayage will more than nil set
this.
Supt. VV. \V. Htarr remarked to a
Morning News reporter the other
day that this action on the part of
tho Central will give t^ie people of
Americus a chance to establish a
good system of drayage, of which
they stand very much in need.
THE CENTRA!. MAY UK I.KH8 UKN
KKOL'6.
This seems to be the only aileru
tlve left them, unless cotton ship
pod to Americus via the Central for
Havanuah is sent over the Bav
nab, Americus and Montgomery
road for tho Central to bring it in
over the Havanuah and Western di
vision from Lyons. If this is done,
Supt. Starr informed n Morning
Newa repertor Saturday afternoon
cotton will be delivered to tho com
press as heretofore. This statement,
however, was inado before the fa
vorable decision of iho railroad
commission. Now that tho Coutral
is sure of its legal right lo refuse to
deliver cotton over its side-'rack*
to the Americusjcompross, the Cen
tral may not bo so generous.
TO CUT ADRIFT FROM THE CBM UAI.
Wbat the outcome of tho uupiear-
antness between the Savannah,
Amoricus and Montgomery road
aud the Central will be is a puzzle.
It Js known that Col. Hawkins has
been restive some time on ac
count of disagreements, and is aux
ious to extend his lice to Savannah
so that his road will be independent
of the Central. A Savannah friend
of Col. Hawkins’ Informed a Morn-
nlng News reporter not long Hnco
that Col. Hawkins feelr the neces
sity of getting to the sea coast with
his road, for at present lie lias no
harbor terminal and terms can be
dictated to him. He is said to have
expressed himself here as being
very much displeased with Savan
nah for not helping him to bring
the road to Savannah aud compell
ing him to pool with the Central at
Lyons. Now that another breach
of friendly relations has developed,
it ia bolieved that ho wilt make up
the eastern end of his line a id ex
tend it to deep water either at Sa
vannah or elsewhere, and thus cut
adrift from the Central. Savannah
is his nearest point, aud naturally
he prefers to come here.
He wanted the citizens of Savan
nah lo make a cash donation to his
road, and Us business men use their
influence in aiding film to get rights
of way into and terminal property
at Bavannah, aud as he was not in
clined to tab* the$30,000 raised, be
lieving it too little for Savannah,
he entered *cU> the anangement
with the Cf.etral Jo join at Lyons.
THE 8. A. H. AND JIACL'KN’A ISLAND
It Is hinted about that the Sav
annah, Americus and Montgomery
may join with the Middle Georgia
and Atlantic iu improving the ter
minal property at Hutchinson
is'uud, and it need. surprise
one if the Macon and Atlantic,
Middle Georgia and Atlantic and
the Savannah, Americus aud Mont
gouiery all come iu on the South
Bound, uniting with the latter lu
union depot on the South Round
property on tho Springfield planta
tion Hutchinson Island is large
enough for terminals for all four
of these independent lines, and.the
expense of purchasing river fron
tage ou tho island divided up
| among the four roads would be
comparatively small one for each.
Bald a gentleman yesterday
discussing the Hituatlon: "Col
Hawkins canuot afford to stay out
in the woods with his road,
must-bring it into the city, for
is plainly the determination of the
Central to extend its Savannah nod
Weston division to head oil the
Middle Georgia and Atlantic,
will never have a better opportuni
ty than light now, when three
other indejieudent roads are knock
mg at the city’s gates.”
Something is on foot, for it was
understood last nigiit that Col. Ma-
chen is expected in Savannah to
day, a much earlier date than has
been anticipated.
NO HOUSES.
Petftons Going Away from Americus
Every Dsy DecaunoThey Cannot Find
Houses.
Every day Homebody goes away
from Americus because they cannot
find houses either lo live iu or to do
business iu.
Within the past week the writer
of this article has seen aud convers
ed with more than a dozen men who
desired to make Amoricus their
home and seemed to experience
much regret because they were un
able to do so.
Ail of these were good straight
forward men, such men as would
prove a valuable acquisition to *uy
city or community, ami when they
went away tocast their lots In other
places and to become permanent
citizens, many of them, of other
low us and cities, Americus suffered
a loss of w’bat wo might have gain
ed iu good and substantial citizen
ship.
Saturday there were two men in
the city looking for homes whom it
would have beeu profitable for
Americus to have obtained. One
wau from Wnycross and oue from
Macon, but they could tlud
houses aud went away.
Mr. H. T. Gay, of Bartow, spent
yesterday in a fruitless search for a
business house and this morning
there a«e dozens of men either
already in the city or who will bo
here in a few days, just such as
those already mentioned,and every
time oue of them goes away the
city of Americus has allowed a dia
mond to Blip through her fingers.
We must have houses for the peo
ple who are Hocking here from all
ijuarters. These moil who havo
money to invest in business, are
.men that we cannot .ailbrd to loose,
and all that is needed is to give
them homes and business houses.
They are already convinced that
Americas is the city of Southwest
Georgia, and are willing to risk a
lifetime here ! f they could onlyse
cure a foothold.
But we will have houses enough
a short time. There ar? some
gigantic building enterprises ma
terializing in the city and in a few
days operations will commence on a
gra^d scale.
