How about that Board of Trade?
Democrats of Sumter county, be
•ure and vote for (’utU and Mc
Donald to-morrow.
No new candidates have been
brought out for tho Senate in sev
eral days, and the election for
representative occurs to-morrow.
Dr. McCune has made a clean
back-down in his ebarges against
Gov. Gordon, and now says he ouly
meant to explain why the Govenor
attacked him in bis speeches.
It is well known that the Itepub
Means have nominated candidates
for representatives, and if all the
colored people Who registered will
vote, it will require every Demo
cratic vote in the county to elec
our nominees Democrats, come
out to-morrow and vote for Cults
and McDonald.
Tht convention which nominated
Capt, W. E. Wooten, did not in
struct him to vote for Gov. Gordon,
The News and Advertiser si>eaks
by the card when it «ays that Cant
Wooten would have refused the
nomination had It been tendered
him on any such terms.—Albany
News.
Tub Recorder read tho proceed'
Inga of the mass meeting which
nominated Mr. Wooten, as pub
lished In the News, and was under
the impressson that the meeting
had Instructed him to vote for Gor
% don. It seems strange that Mr,
Wooten would not hafo accepted
tho nomination had he boon so In
structed, if he wA a Gordon man
Whet reason could he givo in such
e case? It it possible that
Aibany News has labored in vain?
THE SCHOOL TAX
Quite an Interesting discussion
Is going on between several of
the State papern os to the school
tax. It has boon the custom to
divide It equally between tho col
oredraco and the white, though
the whites pay^over throe-fourths
of the sum total
Now, slnoe the Republican gov
ernment has endeavored to blocs
every industry that the Southern
people are engaged In, and Repub
lican conventions in the South
hays passed resolutions of approval ,
the question has arisen if It would
not be well to divide this school
fund—give to the white people the
proportion they pay into the trees
ary for school purposes, and let the
oolored people take whet they pay,
Considering the question pnroiy
in a business manner, It looks as
If the colofed people should be
made to pay for their politics. If
the eohool fund should be divided
as proposed, there Is no doubt but
that It would touch the colored race
in a very tender place. They have
received the benefits of this law so
long that they consider they have
as much right to It ms the white
people, when the trutfis, that they
have been merely objects of oharity
in this respect for many years.
Nine-tentha of the same colored
school teachers, who are paid by
the money of the white people, do
not hesitate to mount the stump
and say all the bitter things they
can think of against the peoplo who
are even then famishing Jhem with
breed and clothing. The white peo
ple of the Sooth have been very
petteal under the olroumtUncee,
and we do notjwondpr that they aro
growing tired of it. The time ie
coming when the colored people of
the South should be taught who
earn for them—the Republican
party In Congress, which votes
away thslr rights, or the white peo-
plc of the South, who give their
children• the benefit of echoole,
churohee, and glva them work at
goodjwagec, which enable* them to
care for their tamillae.
The colored people ehould con-
rider this question very carefully.
Lat them look 'over the State of
Georgia and see how many color,
admen held office under a Repub
lican government, and then eon-
aider how many oolored people an
Ktrerf emnlovment under a Demo
cratic government and they win
readily *aa whether their true
friends, - —
cans.
