In our line of business we are the
recognized leaders, and we propose
to continue to carry off the honors.
While we possess all the requisites
necessary for the success of a legiti

Our friends and the public know

city is still wrought up ovi
marriage of Mr. .Sam Owens
Motou, one of our prettiest and most
accomplished young ladies.
We claimed Miss Moton as one of our
own. She lived only live miles from
here, and spent the major portion of her
time in our burg.
As has been previously stated, Mr.
Owens has proven to be a bigamist, and
his first wife and family reside at God
frey, Ga. Miss Motou's brothers have
sent the sheriff off to arrest Mr. Owens,
and we are anxiously waiting to hear
the result of his search. The contract
ing parties took the train here for Co
lumbus, but their whereabouts are as
yet unknown.
After a long drought of a month, our
citizens and farmers are wearing a happy
smile once more. We have already had
a fine season, and the rain continues to
fall. Vegetation is luxuriant, and all
are counting upon big crops. Our rich
lands afford the finest farming section in
Georgia.
A grand future for Richland. Our
city is on a grand boom; it now has
population of 1,500, and new residences
and stores are continually goiug up, the
clatter of hammers is heard from sun up
till sunset. Mr. Lewis, who recently
moved here from Columbus, is now
building a handsome opera house and
also two spacious brick stores.
Notwithstanding the present panic,
real estate is bring a fair price. New
families move in every week, and this
means moro buildings as tbere is not a
vacant store or dwelling in our midst.
All new comers are greeted with a warm
reception.
We have a guano fretory, planing
mills and numerous other enterprises,
and also a first class bank with a capi
tal of $50,000. three good hotels and a
weekly newspaper. Our school is in a
flourishing condition, the roll now num
bers 118 pupils and we will have a grand
commencement. Richland has accom
plished all this growth in six month, and
and wo expect to have quite a city in
another six.

, Arrested on Suspicion.
Vesterday morning Lieut. Wheeler, of
the city police force, arrested a white
man by the name of W. B. Speer and
lodged him in the county jail.
About a year ago a member of the Grif
fin police force was shot and dangerously
wounded, and the man arrested yester
day is suspocted by the ollicers here of
having done the shooting.
The prisoner admits having had a dif
ficulty with a police officer there some
time since, but aside from this he had
little to say about the matter. The
Mosquitos are beginning to get in their
work in Americus. A few days of such
weather as we have been having, and
sleeping without a net will be a sheer
impossibility.
A gentleman who professes to know
considerable about these pestiferous in
sects, says:
“Being troubled a great deal by them
and the ordinary mosquito netting sold
in the stores proving ineffectual at night,
we naturally turned our attention to the
meteria medica for relief. By dint of
numerous researches and experiments 1
hit upon several simple things which
will make mosquitos in a room as scarce
as lieu’s teeth. Of these the most sim
ple is to get a bunch of dried pennyroy
al and suspend it from the ceiling.,
Mighty little thing isn’t it? But It works
like a charm, A little of the essence of
pennyroyal sprinkled on the bunch will
assist the rapidity of exit. There is one
objection that a great many people have
to this, and this is the odor.
“Another remedy, one that I have not
yet tried, is oil of sassafras, with which
a piece of cloth, suspended in a like
manner, is saturated. It is said to be
very good for tho purpose.
“The old practice of burning cloth
in a room to smoke mosquitos out is
sort of two-edged sword, as likely to
eject the occupant as his annoying in
truders, in fact, it is a remedy worse
than the disease.
“Mosquitos are averse to certain odors
and will not remain where these can
penetrate. That pennyroyal is the most
volatile of these odors, is undeniable.
At least that is what our folk think.
