New Orleans, Oct. 26.—The levee

from three to eighteen feet, covering
five acres in extent. The Louisville and
Nashville railroad has abandoned its
depot at the foot of Canal street and
transferred its business to the Ponchar-

property. It looks as if all the land up

CAUSED BY A MIRAGE.
The llHtkrutine Steadfast Goes Ashore
on the Island of St. Croix*
Philadelphia, Oct. 28.—A mirage in
the Caribbean sea was the cause of the
total loss of the new American barken-
tino Steadfast, while bound from a port
of Spain to Philadelphia with a cargo
of street paving asphalt. She was
wrecked several weeks ago, but the
crew only recently reached here on their
way home from the island of St. Croix,
tho scene of the disaster. When the
Steadfust sighted the lofty peaks of St.
Croix, the atmosphere assumed a pecu
liar light color, and it became imiwssi-
hle to detect the sky from the island,
everything assuming a similar shade
and color resembling the cirro stratus
clouds, hiding the entire lower portion
If the island. The peaks and mountain
tops appeared to be twenty miles away.
The tops of the mountains seemed to be
inverted, the tall cocoanuts appearing
to grow from sky to earth. The sugar
grinding mills were pouring their smoke
downward and tho workmen working
upside down. The Steadfast was kept
under easy sail and perfect control.
Everything went well until a grinding
sound was heard and a sudden tremor
went through the ship. The vessel
crushed over the reefs and was soon
fast oil tlie rocky shore, where her
wreck still remains. The mirage made
the island appear twenty miles away.

wife of August Nan, a wealthy retired
furniture dealer of Brooklyn, was re

had been illegally committed. The
woman has been in the asylum for four
yiitrs. She was sent there on the cer
tificate of two physicians, who pro
nounced her insane. Lawyer Albert
Peck, on behalf of Mrs. Nun, alleged
that she was perfectly sane, und that
■he was deprived of her liberty in order
to enable uer husband to conduct him
self as he pleused in certain respects.
The court. after hearing all the testi
mony and the story of Mrs. Nau, or
dered her releuse. August Nan is well
known in Brooklyn social and political
circles. He was formerly a member of
the Ann of Luug & Nun, who conduct
ed an extensive business at the corner
of Fulton and Clinton streots.
