THE AMER1CUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: TULSDAY, OCTOBER 27, i s»i.
addresses workingmen.
John Dillon Appeal! for Their Support
and Party Succesa.
Duolin, Oct. 96.—John Dillon, mem
ber ol parliament for East Mays, ad
dressing a demonstration of working-
men at Dunkirk, made an appeal for
their support. He dilated upon the
stupidity of trying to quarrel with Eng
land after all the trouble and time oc
cupied in securing her friendship. It
was a terrible thing to ask Ireland, with
her steadily dwindling population, to
break with Gladstone at the risk of
postponing home rule for perhaps an
other decade. A
Mr. Kedmond coulirnot pretond that
Ireland would unite under his leader
ship. If this spirit of faction is per
mitted to spread before two years were
over they would have as many parties
as there are Irish memliers, and be in
the same position as they were fifteen
years ago. when every man was f»r
himself. No success is possible while
the minority refused to be governed by
the majority. He believed that Glad
stone was sincere in his home rule
ideas, but if his bill were inadequate,
lie (Dillon) would be the first to de-
nounee it, an l oust the Liberals from
power if necessary.
AN ARKANSAS SENSATION.
A Land A cent Who Is Found to lit
Embezzler.
St. Louis. Oct. 20.—A special to The
Republic from Van Buren, Ark., says
a decided sensation was created by the
report that J. M. Weaver, who litis
hitherto borne an irreproachable reputa
tion, and being a strict church member,
is an embezzler. Weaver has been a
land agent for the Little Rock and Fort
Smith railroad for a number of years.
His duties consisted of selling land to
settlers, receiving part payment and
transmitting receipts and papers to the
general offices of the company at Mor-
riltowu. After the first payment to
Weaver, according to instructions, he
should have informed the settlers that
they must pay the balance direct to the
railroad company. Instead of doing so,
however, it is alleged that Weaver con
tinued to collect the money. The rail
road people fiually notified the settlers
that unless they paid up immediately
they would bo evicted. This brought
matters to a focus, and revealed the
shortage, which will probably run into
the tens of thousands.
The Pope Writes a Letter.
Rome, Oct. 20.—The pope has writ
ten a letter to the archbishop of Aix,
the prelate who is to be prosecuted by
the French government for disregard
ing the circular of M. Faillines, the
minister of public worship, enjoining
the archbishops of France not to leave
their dioceses without the consent of
the government, an order which was
issued as a result of the recent popalar
manifestations at Rome against the
French pilgrims who were said to have
behaved in a reprehensible uunner at
the Pantheon. In this letter the pope
says that he deplores the fact that the
Roman rioters were allowed to "indulge
with impunity in every kind of license,
profaning the clrarch, insulting the
Pontiff and maltreating pilgrims. 1 ' The
pope adds that he hopes these indict
ments will not lead to "something more
calamitous and lamentable. ”
Town Destroyed by Fire.
Paris, Oct. 28.—Advices have jnst
been received here from Meiringer, in
the canton of Ber, Switzerland, to the
effect that the town has been almost en
tirely wi]>ed out of existence by fire.
The conflagration was funned by a high
wind, and the flames swept away street
after street with frightful rapidity.
Appliances of the corporation for extin
guishing fires proved to be of no use
whatever. The railroad station, post-
office, telegraph office and nearly all
business places and residences were ut
terly destroyed, and in the briefest
space of time. The Victoria hotol and
Wildermmin’s hotel are the only two
structures to mark the situation of this
once prosperous country resort of 8,(100
inhabitants, and they were only spared
owing to their isolation from other
buildings.
He Refuses to Hear Hie Case.
Madison, Wis„ Oct. 28.—Judge Sie-
becker announced that he wunld not
try the interest suits against the state
treasurer because of certain reasons,
which he rofnsed to moke public at this
time. The inference is tnut the judge
has been approached in the way of a
bribe. Attorney General O'connor is
dumbfounded and is loud in his denun
ciation of the party or purties who have
mude it impossible for an upright judge
to try the treasury suits. Judge Sie-
becker states that if made known at
this time his reasons for withdrawing
it would- be impossible to get a fair and
impartial trial of the cases in the state
of Wisconsin. He promises develop
ments hereafter.

already died of the disease, and many

been applied to the sick ones, and with
apparent success. It is that of sawing
off the hums of the affected animals.
This was done by consent of the Hu
