The idea of love at first sight is scout-

found to lids romantic notion.
Here, however, is a tragical example
,,f the truth of the fact that such a thing
;ls love at sight exists, and that it is of-
ten terribly strong.

land to accept a position. lie seemed in
excellent spirits, and on the way talked
and laughed with the railroad men with
out the least restraint.
At Helena, however, just six miles
from Scotland, a change took place, and
a fair woman was the cause.
When Helena was reached Patterson
went out on the platform, and began
joking with one of the brakemen. As
the train stopped before Hotel Sam, lie
glanced up and there on «ho veranda he
saw a woman.
She presented a most beautiful ap
pearance, and as the young man gazed
her fascinations grew upon him. His
manner suddenly changed, and with
great emotion he .asked who she was.
He stood charmed, and as the train
pulled out, he remained to catch a last
glimpse of the fair creature. When out
of sight, lie returned to his seat, but
seemed lost in thought. He acted
strangely and would talk of nothing but
the vision he saw.
“1 love her," said he to a friend, “and
never saw so fair a creature. Already I
am wrapped up in her, and can think of
nothing else. I have met my fate, but
what can I do? 1 don't know her, and
if 1 diil what good would that do ? I
know 1 couldn't marry her, but I can’t
live without her. I can’t marry her, but
I can die for her.”
He was laughed at, and then remon
strated with, but all to no purpose.
On reaching Scotland lie went to the
hotel, but continued his wild talk. He
seemed perfectly sane and saw his fool
ishness, but protested that he bail seen
the only woman he could love, and as he
didn’t even know her he would die
for her.
He went to his room early, and would
s;iy little else than what is given
About eight a peculiar noise was
heard in the room, and on effecting an
entrance a horrible sight met the gaze of
the hotel men.
Patterson was lying on the bed gasp
ing for breath, his throat cut wide open
and a bloody knife lying by his side.
He could hardly speak, and died in a
few minutes.
His last words were: ‘‘1 am dying for
her."
It was a peculiar case, and especially
since there can be no doubt that Patter
son had not a thought of doing such a
rash act until after seeing the woman at
Helena. He was a sensible and good
looking young fellow, and is said to have
come from South Carolina.

Court, appointed administrator ou the

On the day of the tragedy, the parents
left two young daughters, one 4
years old and the other about 10, alone
in the house. By some means the bed
caught afire, and at the same time the
dress of the oldest girl blazed up. The
little one rushed out, and the other un
fortunate creature not knowing what to
do followed out into the open air.
Her clothes, fanned by the breeze,
blazed more, and the child fell almost
consumed to the ground.
Her sister screamed and cried, finally
attracting to the scene some white peo
ple. In the uutnher was Mrs. Williams.
The girl was found lying on the
ground totally unconscious, all the
clothes burned olf, and from head to
foot the body was a mass of burns and
blisters. In places the flesh was hare
and had fallen from the hones.
The sight, was most sickening, and
the moans of the dying negress added to
the horriblencss of the scene.
In spite of this Mrs. Williams stood
bravely by, and ordered that the child
bo carried to her own house. This was
done, and medical attendance was sum
moned at once. Mrs. Williams herself
waited upon the sufferer, and tendered
everything which would add to the girl’s
comfort.
But she was burned to such a terrible
extent that nothing could bo done but
put lu • out of pain, and in about an
hour death relieved her.
