ASPHALT MINES IN TERRITORY
In Which He Has Interest Is Proving
a Bonanza Already—Mr. Bragg
Talks Interestingly of Hfs Invest
ments In Mining There
With miles of the richest asphalt ly
ing at his feet and representing untold
wealth, Mr. George M. Bragg looked
upon the mines, richer than those of
Golcondu, and mentally calculated the
fabulous wealth that he and his asso
ciates will amass soon.
Mr. Bragg returned to Americus yes
terday from a business trip to Colorado
and Tndian Territory, where ho has
mining interests, and tells a very in
teresting story of his trip.
This was his second tour there and
more profitable than the first.
While he is interested to some ex
tent in mines in Colorado it was in In
dian Territory, tho scene of the recent
ly discovered asphalt region, that most
interested him, There the rich black
substatfee in quantities inexhaustible
covers the earth.
And Mr. Bragg is a stocklidlder and
director in a recently organized and
chartered company which owns the
best part of it.
The seam, Mr. Bragg says, is two
miles in length and varies in width
from 90 to l. r >0 feet, and of incalculable
depth. Brills sent down hundreds of
feet did not penetrate it.
It crops out upon the surface at iu
torvals, the rich black substance melt
ing, almost, by the sun.
It is believed that millions of tons of
the crude asphalt can be dug out of tho
ground there, and as It is worth $40 per
ton on the market the value of the
“find” ccn be estimated. And it was
found by a Georgian, too, a former
citizen of Macon.
He and Mr. Bragg aredifelong friends
and are interested together in the as
phalt mine, as are many prominent
people of the locality. The asphalt can
be mined and delivered in New York
for $20 per ton, where it brings $50 on
the market.
Mr. Bragg is greatly elated at the
success of his recent trip and the pros
pect of a fortuno in it.
MORE FACILITIES FOR SCHOOLS
Experiment Stations for the Georgia
Colleges.
Americus is interested in the bill just
introduced by Congressman Adamson
of Georgia to appropriate $*>,500 to each
of tho district agricultural colleges in
the slates as experiment stations. The
bill provides that not more than one
experiment station shall bo in any con
gressional district,' and that the states
shall expend a sum equal, another $2,
500 each. If this bill passes, Its benefits
may bo made available for all the elev
on agricultural schools in Georgia by
establishing n branch of the experi
ment station al each school, and by the
state devoting $2,500 to tho maintenance
thereof. This will allordfrom state and
federal position $5,oo0ner annum. That
ill unquestionably be easy, as the
character of the school is very nearly
akin to the experiment station anyway.
This was the reason so much land was
secured for each of the schools in Geor
gia. If further legislation should he
necessary to make the benefits availa
ble, it is probable that such law will bo
passed at the approaching session of
legislature this summer.

The Grip.
“Before wo can sympathize with
others, wo must havo suffered our
selves." No ono can realize the suf
fering attendant upon an attack of the
grip, unless ho lias had the actual ex
perience. There is probably no disease
that causes so much physical nnd men
tal agony, or which so successfully de
fies medical aid. All danger from tho
grip, however, may be avoided by tho

Chief Engineer J. J. Gaillard of the
Macon, Americus and Albany Electric
Railway, with Messrs. N. J. Cruger
and J. S. Davis of Albany, who are
promoters of this enterprise, were in
Americus yesterday to confer with the
ity council upon matters of very great
importance.
A right-of-way into and through the
city is desired, and it was for the pur
pose of conferring with the city council
in regard to such franchise that brought
the party to Americus.
The survey of tho line is nearly fin'
isbeil, and ingress to the city must now
be arranged.
But upon this point there will be lit
tle difficulty, it is thought, and when
the company makes known its require
ments as to streets, etc., the council
will bo ready to act in tho premises,
As yet tho exact course of the road is
not known definitely.
The surveyors are now'working bo-
yond the southern limits of the city
and coming rapidly this wav.
The completion of this railway means
a vast deal for Americus and all other
towns along the proposed line from
Albany to Atlanta. The road is essm-
tlally a railroad, and will handle us
great volume of freight and othertratfic
as the steam roads here.
Their electric motors, tho gentlemen
hero yesterday stated, will be able to
pull easily a train of one hundred load
ed freight cars—which is beyond the
capacity of a steam locomotive.
The electric company proposes to in
terchange curs and trains with the
steam railway lines, and will be com
petitors for all freight and passenger
business. The line will be well equip-
ed for handling fast freight and pnssen-
gor trains.
Tho electric railway promises to be
come a great developer in south Geor
gia, and Americus bails w’ith pleasuro
its coming here
Another Busy Whirl of the Mills o)

Again the guilty were up against it in
the city court yesterday, and another
bunch of recruits are now' ready for
tho chaingang.
Anderson Westbrook, who mixed up
with a side of meat, will go gangward
or else cough up $75.
General Stephens is a black nig des
pite his military title, and for rolling
tho bones will do general work on the
gang or else pay $40.
Ann Cody is no kin to Biffalo Bull,
but she can point a pistol, and it was
this same act that cost her $20 or eight
months' work.
Jim Baldwin was given a “straight
hot” of a year for larceny.
George Harris got a similar dose, 12
mouths straight, on the charge of sell
Ing mortgaged property.
Governor Vance is a young coon not
half as largo as his title, and for cheat
ing and swindling will pay $50 or serv
10 months.
Elbert Murray,convicted of stabbing,
will bn sentenced today.

Rural Mail Men to Receive Better
Pay.
Judge J. M. Griggs, of Georgia, has
introduced in the house, and will urge
upon the committee on postoifices and
postroads, of which ho is a member, a
bill to increase the salaries of rtiral let
ter carnets from $U0 per montii to $900
per year. Judge Griggs feels that the
present salary paid rural carriers is in
adequate compensation for the service
rondered. In addition to the time re-
quiredof tho rural carrier, there is the
equipment uecesnary for the prompt
delivery of the mails by buggy or on
horseback. It is pointed out that after
a carrier has paid for the hire of his
team, or for the feed of his horso, if he
owns his own animal or team, there is
very little left to meet tho original in
vestment for the horso or to reward the
individual for his services.
