THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., MTlAHTMj GA,
AN AGE OF INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES.
| Do not deceive yourself, for a single moment, into thinking that all the
opportunities have passdd away. Such a belief js the rankest pessimism,
it Is unqualifiedly false. Nothing Is more untrue than a half truth, such as
the old saying that “Opportunity knocks once at every man’s door." a covert
insinuation that It knocks hut thut one time and passes by forevermore. On
the contrary, opportunity, comes time after time. It knocks almost cease
lessly until the end of life. It Is the Inability to perceive It, or if seen to
utilize It, tbat t tells against men, not'the laok of chance to do something that
will tell for their betterment. ■
Today the opportunities for advancement In all walks of life are greater
Ulan they were yesterday, just as yesterday they were greater than the day
before. Last week was superior In its offerings than the week that !t
crowded into the past; this year than last year; this century than last cen
tury; the present at all, times more than the past. The future will be far
more an era of boundless opportunities than any previous time In the world's

and thousands who in recent years havq struggled up from the most pitiful
slate of poverty and loneliness to that of comparative affluence and assured
position, as a complete rebuttal of such an absurdly false claim. The con-
Crete facts seen with their own eyes demolish the abstract claims of the
misguided who look at life through a glass darkened by their own misfor

1 here Is more in the man than In the surroundings has been often said.
Xo matter what the opportunities about them some men would fall. To such
l his seems a day devoid of opportunity. Then cannot see themselves as
others see them, they cannot realize that the fault Is with themselves and
not with the times. But their complaints and faultfindings do not change the
status of the day. It Is burdened with a glorious harvest of opportunities.

Mr. J. \V. Hhelliehl voiced the
views of all conservative men
his exceedingly interesting inter
view in the Times-Recorder
yesterday on the railroad situation
Those{• views, we feel convinced
are endorsed by all of the bnsincs;
men of Americus, as well as by the
general public that has given any
intelligent consideration at all to
the matter.
As Mr. Sheffield forcefully
stated, there|cannot be a ceaseless
attack made upon’railroads in this
or any other, section, • without
hampering them seriously in their
work of improvement and exten
sion. There is no doubt that there
have been wrongs perpetrated by
some of the men into whose hands
the control of some great systems
has fallen, men who have used
their positions of trust with oat
regard to their obligations to the
public and for the sole purpose of
enriching themselves.
Onr railroads are the greatest
I actor in onr prosperity. Of what
I avail would be our thirteen million
bale crop of cotton if the arrange
ments for handling it were
seriously enrtailed. Of what
avail would it be to extend our
peachjorchards, increase the area
devoted to truck, or otherwise
expand our agricultural and
industrial life, if the railroads are
to be so harrassed, hampered and
held down that they cannot
proceed to take care of the in
creased business of the country.
Let us be sensible about this
question. The railroads are
not the enemies of the conn
try. They are proper subjects
for criticism, at times, but they
