If all the energy that is put in
to kicking was put into pushing
how rapidly some towns would
grow.
Pittsburg now has 553,000 popu
lation. No recent statistics as to
the number of the divorced haye
been made public.
Our genial Commissioner of
Agriculture,Hudson, we believe, is
somewhat mistaken in his view as
to the class of immigrants Georgia
wants. He is partly right and
partly wrong in his adyice to
Commissioner Strarhau that Geor
gia wants farm labor only. Geor
gia dots want farm labor, wants an
1 abudance of it, and wants it just
as quickly as it can be induced to
come here, but in addition it wants
jnst the class of immigrants that
3Ir. Straebau has been sending to
Georgia, skilled mechanics,
carpenters, machinists, etc-., men
who have served their time under
good masters at trades and are
now thoroughly competent journey •
men.
Naturally Commissioner Hudson
is inclined to somewhat magnify

THIRD WELL NOW BEING BORED
The head of the Russian church
is dead. This is not half as in
teresting an item of news as the
story of a dog fight in the next
block.
Not a single property owner in
Athens has tried to swear off his
-assessment this year. Athens
must have had a real revival of
religion lately.
We kill and injure about fifteen
limes as many people on onr rail
roads in a year as they do in all
’ Europe. This helps to make room
for the immigrants.
Despite the hot weather the
Macon Telegraph springs a new
one on ns. It is: What will
Teddy to do with us when he be
comes an ex-president!
Atlanta Journal charac-
nap^ini«y ’s recent speech as
the “playful waters of a perfumed
sea.” The Journal is suffering
from a severe attack of anti-
railroadphobia.
the importance of
agriculturalists to fill up the waste-
places of the State. That is bis
peculiar function in the state
government, to promote the in
terests of agriculture. But in
order to do that it is not necessary
to throw cold water on the work of
bringing in desirable mechanics.
Georgia is sadly in need of this
class of labor. In every one of our
towns and cities there is room for
the man who is skilful at his trade'.
The country has a surfeit of poor
mechanics, men who half under
stand their business, but it lacks
the highly skilled men who know
how to do what they are put to do,
and arc willing to do it well and
without constant supervision and
overhauling.
We sincerely trust that Mr.
Strachan will not abate his efforts
to get sturdy Scotch mechanics to
migrate to Georgia. At the same
time if he can get a cargo or two of
Scotch farmers and farm helpers
he will likewise be doing a
tremendous service for Georgia.
At Reservoir and Contractor Hopes
to Strike Water at 700 Feet,
the level at Which Present
Supply Obtained.
WHEN THE CENTRAL WAS “USTED
The work of sinking another artesian
well for tbo city was entered upon yes
terday by Mr. 8. 8. Chandler, to whom
the contract was awarded recently'and
Americus' water supply will be in-
creased to this extent.
This will give the city three tine ar
tesian wells at the reservoir.
Mr. Chandler Is fully well equipped
for the work in hand and expects to
strike water at depth of 700 feet, pene
trating the underground stream which
feeds the two wells there.
While the city’s water supply has
been ample up to this time the rapid
growth of Americus makes it impera
tive to urovido for the early future, and
to that end the city council gave the
contract for still another well.
The splendid health record of Amer
icus is attributed largely to her abso
lutely pure artesian water. .Besides
the wells owned by the city there are
soveral others here upon private prop
erty,affording plenty pure water.
The new well will probably be
plcted within sixty days.

In the palmy Gays, not so many
years back, when the Central rail
road was largely owned in Georgia,
and was the proud boast of the
entire State, when widows and
orphans lelt that they were provi.
ded for for life because their means
were invested in its stock, the
Central was not “listed'* on Wall
street.
The Central did aot suffer be
cause it was not daily quoted on the
stock exchange of New York.
Its earning capacity was not
diminished, nor was public confi
dence in it lessened by the fact
that its name did not appear

.Editor Graves says Hoke Smith
was selected for Secretary of the In
terior by reason of his superb
physique. There is no doubt that
Smith’s physical bearing had a
tremendous effect on the Georgia
voters in the last campaign. He
actually swamped Howell at the
beginning by sheer avoirdupois.
The impulse of spring moves iu
the breast of Editor Rainey, and
inspires him to write; “The air
iB redolent with fragrance <ff the
plum blossoms, the strawberries
are getting larger and more
luscious; the bain- of spring is in
the air; the mocking birds are
singing all night. The world here
in sonthwest Georgia is pleasant
and joyons.” Editor Rainey was
evidently ent out for an immigra
tion agent. Bnt he hasn’t told the
Aalf of the story, as we all know.
Hoke Smith is not interfering in
-She selection of the President of
thenextSenate, bat ten to one the
-choice will be a Smith man.
It was felt that the Central was
old fogeyish because its securities
were not dealt iu actively in Wall
street. It was behind the proces
sioti, and needed to be brought up
to date.
So the Central was listed in
New York.
Old Dr. Falligant, a prominent
citizen of Savannah at the time,
made the remark when the
announcement was made that the
Central has been placed on the
board at the stock exchange:
“That reminds me of listing the
name of a virtuous woman ia
bawdy bouse.’’
Subsequent events demonstrated
that tbedoetor was not far w rong
in bis inferences.
“Savannah grows greater every
year," says the Evening Press,
“because its people are becoming
more and more of a unit in their
work for it.” Americus will grow
greater every year lor exactly the
same reason. You cannot hold
back a city whose people are work
ing unitedly for its progress.
“Never before has the proposi
tion of government ownership of
railroads loomed so probable or
appeared so desirable at it is at the
present time,” says the Georgian.
Graves and Bryau think alike.
