AS every part of the body is dependent on tlie blood for nourishment
strength, it is necessary that this vital fluid be kept free from germs

injuriously on the system aud affects the general health, or culminates in

different skin affections show that the blood is in a feverish and diseased

PULL TOGETHER FOR A GREATER AMERCUS.
The secret of success for a city like Amerlcus lies in imlllui; to-
Kethcr. As with the crew of tho life boat. It is the long pull, the steady
pull, and the pull together, that sends the craft ahead. If one or two of
the crew back water while the others bend to the oar there Is not the
same speed and headway as though nil arms moved in unison and the
oars cleaved the water with the same force and at the same time.
So It Is with a city, and especially with a city like Amerlcus, that
has ample isjwer within Itself to forgo to tbe front. Its momentum must
come from within and not from without. It must in the main rely on
Its own people, on Its own crew, as It were, to keep It on top of the
waves, with head to the front. The city that rests Its hopes of progress
on outside forces, on ilie assistance and energy that will coine to It from
abroad, and sits Idly on Its oars while waiting for others to come to Its
help, Is not the city that adds yenrly io its business and tHipulatlon. It
Is the city, that has taken for Its motto the time-honored maxim: “The
gods help those who help themselves,” and lives up to it,, that has no
dread when the census enumerators nrrlvo. It faces the world with
pride in Its pnst, confidence in Its future, anti a store of determination
that overcomes all obstacles and brushes aside ail difficulties.
Amerlcus has had tills spirit In the past. There Is no doubt of that
When one considers how this city has gone through the stress ot finan
cial troubles and come buoyantly anti smilingly to the top. It Is nt once
appreciated that Its people hare been animated not only by love of their
town, hut by absolute faith in Its ability to hold Its own in the face of
competition and disaster. We have no doubt that same spirit Is here
today, that It still exists as a most potent force In the business life of
the community, ami that, while at times It may seem dormant. It Is In
readiness to net promptly arid decisively for the good of Americas nt all
limes whenever the occasion requires.
Every city must have Its leaders, men of ability, men of character,
men of energy, men of means. Americas lias such men. But behind
these leaders must he tho Irresistible force of an awakened, enthusiastic
and united community. I.eaders cannot accomplish anything, or at least
hut little, unless backed by followers. The follower Is just as import
ant. in one sense, as the lender. In Amerlcus everyone can be an nggres
Hive and loyal follower, eager to speak for Amerlcus and work for
Amerlcus. and to hold up the hands'of those who may he at tho bead
of movements having for their puriwse the advancement of Its Interests.
We all want a GREATER AMERICAS, a city of larger and more
varied business Interests, a manufacturing city, a city of repute as an
educational center, a city of comfortable homes, of prosperous, contented
people, with paved streets and all of the appurtenances that go with a
progressive community In these days. The man *who does not want
progress Is recreant to his duly as a citizen, nnd unmindful of the obliga
tion resting upon him. To bring tills greater city we must all work to
gether. No one has the right to hang as a brake on the wheels of the
city’s progress, to impede Us forward movement, either from indiffer
ence or from jealousy or from any other unworthy motive. No matter
what position may have been assigned one In the work there should be a
cheerful, whole-hearted, enthusiastic support.
Pull together for the future upl ullding of the city. That is the way
to realize the fondest hopes we may entertain as to the hereafter of
Amerlcus.

west has enjoyed in the past
twenty years—that is, the great
est period of success iu her
history.”—John W.” Gates.
The South is to enjoy the greatest
period of her progress and pros
perity during the next twenty
years. We all believe this. W
all believe that in this great
onward movement of the South
Georgia will be in the lead, far
surnassing in its development in
everv direction that of any other
State of the South, if not of the
entire country Georgia, we know,
with its variety of climate, of
natural resources, mineral and ag
ricultural, wealth its practically
untouched water power and vast
industrial possibilities, has hardly
as yet begun its vast onward
march. Great as we may think
its progress to have been during
tbe past ten years it will sink into
insignificance compared to what it
will be during tbe next ten.
It may be tiresome to some to
dwell on these facts, yet it is of
vital importance that we appre
ciate them at their full value. It
is only by knowing and accepting
them that we will be stimulated to
put forth the exertions necessary
to win fur us our proportionate
share of this tremendous develop
ment that is coming upon this
State and section. It is for this
reason that the Times-Recorder has
dwelt upon, and will continue to
dwell upon, the woik that Ameri
cas must do unceasingly to put
itself in position to secure its full
share of the blessiug the future
holds in store for the entire (South.
The South’s greatest period of
progress is‘just ahead .This state
ment should apply with peculiar
force to Amerieus. Everv man in
this city should feel within his
heart that the period of greatest
prosperity and development for
Americas is also j nst ahead. Once
all of our people begin to feel this
way it will be impossible to hold
back Americas. It will go
forward from the sheer impluse
that will be given to it by a united,
courageous and sangninecitlzenry.
The Times-Kecorder will never
allow an opportunity to pass to im.
press this upon our people. It may
seem like a twice-told tale, bat it
cannot be told too often. It cannot
be impressed too strongly upon
our people. It will accumulate
force and develop new meaning
with every repetition.
The greatest progress and pros
perity of Americas is just ahead.
Take that tact to heart. Think
ove: it. And then work to make
that prosperity greater than even
onr most sanguine hopes would
tacit., m
TP
nesday. It put the world on notice
that thiseity isdetermined to avail
itself of every opportunity to ad
vance that presents itself. Itprov
ed conclusively to the great public
outside of Sumter county that
Amerieus has no fear as to its own
future, that it realizes that it has
am ole opportunities to grow in
population and business, and that
it does hot propose that a single
one of them shall escape because of
any lukewarmness on its part.
Hut there was also anotner thing,
that was demonstrated to the world
that was of even more significance.
It was that the people of this city
are practically a unit in their
determination to work for Ameri
cus. That was the real lesson of
the returns^
It was, to all .practical ends,
unanimous vote for all the content
plated improvements. There was
little voting on the negative side,
but not sufficient to possess any
significance. The few who voted
against street paving and school
bouds were, in all probability, not
really averse to these improve
ments, lint were of the mild that
more definite information should
haye been furnished as to exactly
how the money would be expended.
This unanimity of sentiment
speaks well tor Amerieus. It was
generally recognized th?t the
affirmative side would easily carry
the election. The fact that so large
number of tbe business men
went to the polls to record
their views and assume
definite stand for progress told
plainly the renewed interest
that is felt in the welfare of the
city. It is as though Amerieus
had had a new birth and was once
more in tbe hey day of youth, full
of vigor and ambition.
A united people can overcome
all obstacles. The people of
Americas are united.
Let us stay united and work as
one man for the upbuilding of the
city.
