JOHN W. SHIVER,
The ring of the hammer and buzz of
the saw now awaken the echoes in the
vicinity of the Third District Agrieul
tural college in the pretty southern
suburbs of Americus. Work has actu
ally begun, and soon the handsome
structures will rise majestically in the
heart of the forest thereabout.
Everything is now in good shape to
push forward building operations.
Mr. J. M. Dassett, of Griffin, repre
senting the Gresham Company, con
tractors, and Mr. John W. Shiver, who
is also alike interested, M ere busily
employed about the grounds yester
day.
Already a temporary office building
has been erected and likewise a large
machine shop, with telephone service
established. These are but temporary
quarters and much needed just now
road is also being graded from the col
lege grounds to the Seaboard sidetrack
recently completed there.
This will greatly facilitate the un
loading of building material, which is
now arriving rapidly, carloads of lum
ber, brick, cement, lime and other
buildincr supplies required.
Levels were run yesterday by Mr,
Bassett for the concrete floors of the
two mala buildings, and a start upon
both of these will soon be made.
Everything there in a building way is
progressing most favorably, and the
work is going to be pushed rapidly
as the brickmasons are put upon it.
Very soon now the college grounds
will be a place of interest to hundreds
as the work progresses.

Will Be Made in a Few Days Now-
Company to Have Men Here This
Week to Begin the Prelim
inary Work.
There will be something doing here
this week relativo to the early prelim
inary work In establishing that great
electric power plant in Amencus, as
well as looking over the grounds for
the electric railway system to be con
structed under terms of the company.
Electricians and others will be sent
from New York for the purpose.
For now that the people of Americus
have, by an almost unanimous vote,
ratified the contract made by the city
council, the company is ready to dis
charge its part of the obligation.
As the Times-Hecorder stated some
time since, a great ivower house will be
erected in the northern part of the city,
and here will be installed the imodern
and costly equipment which will
supply power for the electric line,
light the city and pump water.
The erection of the power house will
be the first work of the company as it
is desired to improve the city’s light
ing system and prepare to pump the
water suppy with as little delay as
possible. This done the survey ana
building of the electric street railway
will follow.
The company is prepared to push
forward the work rapidly when once a
beginning is made.
Like matrimony to an old maid, it
was a long time eominr but it come at
last and Americus is , going skating.
Years ago ther towns were inculated
with the skate germ, but Americus
ducked successfully and saved her
neck, likewise .her limbs.
But now she is up against it good
and strong, at last.
We skate to breakfast and skate to
school, we skate to business as a rule;
skate to dinner and skate to church,
and to bed we go with a skateful. lurch
skate! skate? skate.
Several years ago the skate microbe
got in its fatpl work at Albany and
Barron’s Lane, whaile evonCordele and
Vienna rolled *‘em soiuy and sent tho
mortuary records up to tho average,
while buying crutches for the cripple.
Bi|t Americus slumbered.
Her male citizens rolled the bones
while the dames rolled their eyes and
hair, but none rolled on skates.
Suddenly, and without warning the
storm breaks and the city, skatorially
erwhelmed. From Isomville
Brooklyn Heights the populace
awheel, and the hum of business
drowned in|the whirr and roar of the
skates.
Many fall, and the doctors work
overtime with punctured legs and
broken arms; yet on we skate.
From the little tots, baby girl skaters
of five and six, up to toothless and
hairless spinsters who wept at the news
ofLee’s surrender; coy maidens and
stately matrons fat and fair, the malady
is spreading quite alarmingly.
The iceman skates sin with your si
pound bit of Ice (charged ten) while the
butcher’s boy brings on his skates the
bullet-proof breakfast steak.
Even the cook skates in an hour late,
if she comes at all.
But Americus enjoys it. Our miles of
smooth, hard tiled pavements form an
endless rink, and little girl tots can
skate to their hearts content without
hurting the walks. And, bless their
hearts, they aro doing it, and’ no old
kicker can stop these girls.
“On with the dan^e; let joy be un
confined.”

One Hundred Dollars Now Offered for

Ah will bo seen by the change in the
official advertisement elsewhere, the
reward o tie red for each of the five re
cently escaped negroes has been in
creased from $30 to $10o.
This extra inducement may have the
effect of stimulating officers elsewhere
to exert themselves to detect and cap
ture the runaway convicts.

“On To Jamestown" is the watch*
ord of the fair contestants for the
ticket offered by the Times-Kecorder to
the most popular lady, and each day
interest in tho contest grows greater.
Not in years has Americus been so
much interested In a contest of this
kind. *
All over the city the eoui>on clipping
goes on merrily, and the total vote of
the four contestants already announced
rapidly increases correspondingly.
Their friends aro busy as never before.
Yesterday’s ballots sent in made tho
totals as fellows:
Miss Mattie Bivins. 204
Miss Loniic Greene 178
Miss Mabel Sawyer 144
Miss Mary Stevens. io«
Thus it*is seen that the total vote of
each young lady is increased very con
siderably in the ballots sent in yester-
day.
The trip to tho Jamestown Exposi
tion. offered by the Times-Kecorder, is
w'ell worth contesting for as it includes
a round trip ticket and hotel expenses
