S.S.S. POBELY VEGETABLE
.Not only is a medicine valuable for its ability to cure disease, but the
. iu which it affects the system is a very important factor. -When the
f v stem is infected with the germs of disease as in Rheumatism Catarrh
Scrofula, Sores and Ulcers. Skin Diseases, Contagious Blood Poison etc ’
every particle of its recuperative strength is needed to assist in eliminating
the poisons and impurities which are causing the trouble. It should not be
dosed and treated with strong mineral mixtures and concoctions that further
.... to the burden, by disagreeably affecting the bowels, producing indiges-
■ on, or eating out the delicate linings and membranes of the stomach. The
absolute vegetable purity of S. S. S. has always been one of the strongest
rcii’ts in its favor, and is one of the principal reasons for its being now the
most widely known and universally used blood medicine on the market
j t is made entirely of healing, purifying roots, herbs and barks of the for

“THE PLEASANT PERIL OF ENTHUSIASM.
Some one has referred to "The pleasant peril of enthusiasm’’ as one of
the dangers of an active life/ It Is far better, though, to run this risk than
to be guilty of a life of comparative Inactivity, a life marked by a lack of
Interest in the world and its problems. Better far to “slop over” with en
thusiasm in good causes, or even at time In causes that may be mistakes,
than to dilly-dally through existence, unable to get up enough enthusiasm to
strike for anything good or against anything bad. Spread-eagleism, offensive
though it may be to refined taste, is far preferable to an utter lack of
patriotism.
Indlfferentlsm Is certainly the poorest phase of life. The most provok
ing person to be met wltu is he who never enters Into anything with his
whole soul, as though his very life depended on Its successful consummation.
There are too many of such men and women all around us. They never get
enough of a thrill into their narrow lives to wake them up into a determina
tion to do anything or be anything. They nre half-hearted creatures who
count for almost nothing In the work of the world. Sometimes they are
indifferent because they are lazy, someth'*'s because they are afraid to have
an opinion, sometimes because they have not mind or soul enough to grasp
whut is presented to them. But In any event they are little better than
ciphers.
It Is the enthusiastic men who do things. They are the men who con-

I On, regardless of what may come, till the prize Is Ills.
The enthusiasm of its leaders is the coro of every public cause. Without
I the Intense conviction that lies at the root of enthusiasm it Is impossible
to lead others. What could be expected of a statesman, or soldier, or re
former, who acted as though his mind were burdened with doubta and feart,
who conveyed the Impression to those he met that his soul was not in the
I work set before him? Speedily he would be replaced or his cause would go
I down in Ignoble defeat.
Do not be afraid to show enthusiasm, no matter what the cause In
I which you have enlisted. Of course you may be called a fanatic, but better
that empty nccusatlon than the stigma of Indlfferentlsm to everything. If
you are a prohibitionist, be an enthusiastic one; If you are not, be enthusi
astic. If you are a high tariff man be one In dead earnest, and likewise If
yon are u tariff reformer. At least have the virtue of strong devotion to
whatever principles you do espouse. It Is never too late to change them if
you find that they were wrong. And when you are conylnced, do not be
ashamed to be just as .vigorously enthusiastic In the new cause as you
were In the old. The Idle foolish may laugh at you, but down In their
hearts they will finally respect you as a man who Is not afraid to wear his
| colors publicly and fight in the open for Ills views.
There Is entirely too much lasslt-udo these days about all sorts of
llhlngs. The churches are Buffering from an overburden of Christians who
are afraid to be enthusiastic in their great cause. They remind us of the
saying of one of the characters In “John Ward, Preacher," who thought that
if ” those who say they believe In hell were lit dead earnest the world
I would have been converted long ago." There Is a wealth of suggestion in
■ his cutting comment. It is the ladadalslcal church members who bring
their cause Into ridicule and contempt among the worldly minded. They
I are really afraid of being accused of enthusiasm.
Cultivate the habit of enthusiasm. It will do you a world of good. If
I you are young he enthusiastic about your school, and your sports, about
your favorite authors, nbout your friends, about the v- cation you arc going
to pursue, the college you nre going to attend, the girl you nre going to
marry. Anil if you are older, carry the same valuable trait Into your daily
| life. Be enthusiastic about your town, your church, your secret orders, your
business, your political party. You will accomplish a hundred times more
If you accept enthusiasm as one of the conquering factors of life, and the
[self-satisfaction you will enjoy will be immcnsureable. ^
Be enthusiastic for AmerUus!
That is ono way, nnd a great way, to aid in Its upbuilding.

The claim has lieen made in the
past that fanners,e anil more
particularly those of the South,
were not willing to learn that they
preferred to follow in the same old
farrow, imbibing no new idea and

if this were ever true, and we
doubt thatlit ever was, such a
statc""of mind ""has passed away.
There are uo.farmers in the’eountry
to-day more eager to leant new
methods of agriculture than the
young men of the South. To-this,
in a large measure, the vast strides
that larmiug has made in this sec
tion in the past ten years is due.
With establishment of the agri

During the last campaign Judge

eagerness of farmers to be taught
the Jacksonville Times Union says:
Intelligence has grown and the
intellect has been sharpened
through the many agencies by
means of which the agricultural
portion of the commnnity has been
put in close touch with the world
at large, as the farm telephone,
rural free deliveries, the electric
railway and hard roads. Congress
man Lamar, himself a tobacco
raiser, is delivering lectures on
tobacco raising in his district,
accompanied by a tobacco* expert
from the national department of
agriculture. A cotton school is
to be held at Barnesville, Ga.,
daring July and Augusta, where
experts on cotton will give instruc
tion through lectnres, covering
grading, marketing and handling
of cotton in all its phases and con
ditions. A similar work In Texas
produced good results. In fact,

Now comes a letter from
man in whicli he declares that
Roosevelt sent for him, told him
that money was necessary to win
the election, and urged him to raise
it. Depew was a drawback to the
party success in. New York and
Roosevelt agreed to make him an
ambassador fn ge r rid of him.
With that understanding Harri
man went borne to wo.-k and
through his intinence the barrel
was filled to overflowing, the cam
paign was supplied with grease
snffleient to carry it through, and
Roosevelt was elected.
And now comes the President
denouncing Hardman's letter as a
“deliberate and wilful untruth.N.
But inasmuch os he also charged
Parker with the same disregard of
truth, and it has been shown that
the Jndge told the truth, how is
the pnbllc to know bnt that Harri
