Everything For Table Is
Higher.
ALL SUPPLIES ARE ADVANCING
And House Keepers Are Faced With
a Problem in Suppling The Table
•••A General Advance All
Along The Line.
l'eople who eat,or rather those whose
misfortune it is to have to supply the
table commodities, are decidedly up
against it both as to quantity and the
high prices demanded for everything
from ‘‘ye staff of life" to the dainties
and delicacies of the dessert.
Any Americus woman will sub.
stantiate the barrowing truth of this
plain statement of facts, f
There is little to be had in first place,
while the continued advance in' prices
of everything for the table, from salt to
sugar, is calculated to put all but mil
iionalres out of business.
Hams, Hour, lard, sugar—in fact,
everything is up and going higher.
In years agono it was possible to buy
chickens in Americus, but now they
are just about as plentiful as hundred
dollar bills in a collection plate. Even
hens retired upon a pension, and whoso
fiesh would turn tho teeth of man, can
not be bad here longer.
Commodities most used in this sec
tion aro bacon, hams, lard, butter,
cheese, eggs, fresh moats, flour,
vegetables, etc., and in every instance,
with the possible exception of flour,
the advance, which has been steady,
hold up during Match. :
“It will bo a hard mattor to convince
people that there has been a decline m
the commodity market,” said a well
known retailer.
Even cannod goods have advanced
and canned horse and desslcated
mule aro flying as high as canned
chicken and canned turkoy. Butter,
eggs and all produce aro higher than
over before, and ut times the local
market is quite bare of all.
The thoory that “two ran liye as
cheaply as one” is all right In the fairy
book but It doesn't hold good at the
grocer’s—not in Americus."

at their home here. It was their fhther's
fifty-fifth birthday.
Mr. John A. Cobb, Jr., diod at his
home in Cordele at 11 o'clock Thurs
day morning, his sudden demise prov
ing a great shock to his relatives and
many friends in Americus, where he
was reared nnd bad over been hold
the highest esteem among all.
The end came, no doubt, as the result
of a long period of illness.
Quite rocentlv ho left the Savannah
Hospital, where ho had remained sev
eral weeks and apparently was benefit
ted to an extent, though the improve
ment was not prmanent.
Several days ago ho came to Ameri
cus, his former homo, upon a visit to
his father, Captain John A. Cibb,
spending two or threo days here pleas
antly with the family. Ho returned to
Cordele, resuming his business as man
ager of tho ice company In that city.
The announcement of his sudden
death yesterday was a terrible shock to
his family and friends here.
Captain and Mrs. John A. Cobb, Mr.
and Mrs. James Taylor, and Miss
Sarah Cobb, bis sistors, left by the noon
train yesterday for Cordele.
Mr. Cobb was one of tho best known
young men in south Georgia, and no
other was more esteemed. Uf genial
disposition ho mado friends evory-
where and throughout the state his
death will be deplored. He was 35
years of ago, and successfully engaged
in business.
Seven years ago he married Miss
Bessie De Barry of Tallahassee, who
survives him, there being no children,
The body will be taken to that city to

Tho meeting of the Directors and
members of the Americus Board of
Trade last night was one of the most
Important and most interesting that
has been held in some time. Tliero
was a good attendance and an unusual
degree of interest was manifested.
A number of valuable suggestions for
the good of Americus were mado, dis
cussed, and acted upon, and it is prob
able that excellent results will flow
from the work of the meeting.
The various matters that were con
sidered by the meeting I will be pres
ented and discussed at length In later
Issues of the Tlmes-Recorder. Briefly
summarized,the important work of the
meeting was as follows:
The membership committee reported
that twenty eight new members bad
been added since the last meeting,
making a total paying membership at
this time of one hundred and eighteen.

County Commissioner N. A. Itay,
who was in the city today attending
the convict investigation, states that
the peaches in his great orchard are
now abopt the size of the end of a man's
finger and are in a thriving state.
“I find the peaches aro about as - for
ward as usual at this time of the year,”
said Mr. Rsy, “and they have not been
injured by the cold spells wo havo had.
“I do not tbifik they can be hurt now
unless tbo a-oatber should develop a
temperature of about 26 degrees, when
they might go by the board. Other
wise I look for a good crop of a fine
quality.”
Mr. Kay has about fifty acres incorn,
from which ho expects a good yield.
It Is his Impression that a lot of cotton
in this section will have to be re-plant-

Americas supply doalers aro offering
the highest price ever paid here for
common peas, cowpeas, 92.25 per bush
el, but even this phenomenal advance
fails to secure the peas from the fact
that none ere to bo had here, the limit
ed supply having been exhausted.
More than two months ago the price
of peas advsncod rapidly and the small
quantity saved here, less .than 5 000
bushels, were sold at prices prevailing
—about 91.50 per bushel.
Since then the pAat scarcity of peas
has created a heavy demand and ean^
sequent further advance.
Thousands of bushels were shipped
from Americas to points in Virginia
and Louisians, where they are planted
as fertilizer for worinout tobacco and
sugar lands. As a land restorer these
common field peas have no equal.
And the shipping away of such
quantities' has caused la scarcity for
planting purposes in Sumter.
A gentleman here tried to buy a
hundred bnshels yesterday for ship
ment to Natchez, Miss., and freoly of
fered 92.25 por bushel but without so-
curing any. In Vicksburg, Miss., ho
says, poas command that price—<2.25
por bushel tho year round with fow
offered.
Farmors use thorn as fertilizer, the
lands being too valuablo for cano and
cotton to bo plan tod in peas.
Lands about Amorlcas and through
out this section will produco .from
twonty to thirty bushols por aero, oven
a second crop or whon planted with
corn, and 15 conts por bushel will lay
