A revival of troublous times for
Ireland, after several years of
wawonU’d quiet, is expected. The
society called “Sinn Fein,” mean
ing, literally, “for onrselves,”
•omposed of the hottest of the
Mti-Biitons, a majority of them
young men, has gained considers
Ny in importance lately. It
proposes the complete boycott of
» England; that the Irish members
■ decline to attend Parliament; that
Mahmen refuse to enter into bus
iness or social relations with the
English in Ireland, and that, as
teas possible, Irishmen abstain
flrom enlisting in the army and
ftom buying English goods.
their abiding place, such a city has
in it elements of attractiveness
that tell for the fatnre of its peo
ple far more than its mere material
aims.
It is a gratification to know that
some of these higher things of
life are enconrged in Amerlcus,
that they have taken deep root,
and flourished and are bearing
rich fruitage. The article by
Miss Annie May Bell,in Sunday’s
Times-Kecordcr, drew attention
to the growth of mnsical cnltnre
hero, That in this city there are
several hundred students of music,
that there are thee well patronized
schools devoted to that art,' that
the public taste in musical matters
gradually, bat surely, being
elevated, all this speakes highly
for this city. What has been
done 4n music cannot but lead np
to a love of that which is best in
the other departments of true
culture. A mnsical city can never
have a low standard in its other
tastes. As its mnsical standard
is elevated it most be lifted up in
other directions as well.
The time will yet come whem
Americas will have i's musical
festivals, when it will have a sufii
dent number of lovers of good
music to bring here the noted
artists ot the country, when it will
be possible to offer to ,the public
tbe best vocal and instrumental
talent of tbe day. That time may
not be far distant. The teachers
here are doing a good work. They
are a direct benefit to tbe city and
it isa pleasure to utter a word
commendation and enconragement
The Times Recorder stands for the
industrial and business upbuild
ing of Amerlcus, but it stands for
the higher things of life as well.
