SHIPPERS GET CARS IN
, TIME TO SAVE CROP.
Americus Cost Lillie Fruit
For Lack ot Cars.
Number Came Sunday
and the Situation
Was Relieved.
Immense relief was afforded in the
.AxaerJcus pfeach orchards Sunday
trnorning when the fruit shippers look
ed out and beheld in their freight yards
.all the refrigerator cars needed for
■ funnedlate purposes. The cars came
:.Saturday night and relieved the sit-
cuatioz here.
Of course, much loss resulted from
mot being able to get the cars Satur
day, as a great deal of fruit packed
r.Eor shipping Saturday night was ren-
.tiered useless.
While little actual work «las done
ijn the packing houses here Sunday, it
vr»aa a case of "the oxe in the ditch, ’
rand could the laborers have been em
ployed Sunday for love or money the
. packing houses would have been akin
do hives of industry.
At Fort Valley the situation was
likewise relieved Sunday by the plac
ing of cars, and while the loss there
-was enormous it really was less than
^anticipated. The situation there and
at Marshallville on Saturday was a
great deal worse than in Americus.
Here, all of the orchards, except the
Bagley-Ray Co., have finished ship
ping and quit work.
Thus far a total of 221 carloads
have been shipped from Americus. The
"Ware-Progress Co. has shipped 67
.cars, the Raymond Co., 50 cars, foe
i Carolina Realty Co., 20 cars, L. U.
f rjansford 4 cars and the Bagley-Ray
* Co., up to yesterday at noon, had ship-
;j»d 70 carloads.
Tfclis gives a total ot 221 carloads
■to this date. ,
The Bagley-Ray Co. Is yet in the
very midst of the shipping Season, and
-will ship many additional cars of the
-finest Eiberias this week and early
next week. Prices continue good, net
ting the growers about $1 per crate
- over all expenses. Americus groVers
-.are highly pleased. '
Borne of the prettiest fruit grown
fin many years lias Jjeen gathered from

fficulty has been experienced In ma;

C. K. Ausley, of Bainbridge, who 'S
returning from a motor tour through
the North, accompanied the scouts in
his Buick roadster.
The party left. Atlanta Monday
morning and left Macon yesterday
morning in a rain.
Mr. Weldon states that the rain con
tinued all the way to Fort Valley. Ma
con county was visited by a terrific
rain early in the morning. Conse
quently, the roads were muddy all the
way to EllaviUe.
The tourists were met near Monte
zuma by a delegation representing the
Board of Trade of that city and were
guests at a barbecue given at the
’Macon county convict camp. All the
commissliners were present, along
with ex-Congressman Elijah Lewis
and Senator Hayas and thirty others.
Mayor Tift, of Albany, wired to
Americus to know when the scout
car Would leave here, stating that r.
delegation of Albany motorists would
meet.them.
As It was late when the visitors
reached Americus, and as they wished
to mAet the people of Smithville and
Leesburg, they decided to spend the
night here and go <fn to Albany this
morning.
Chairman Frank Sheffield took Mr.
Weldon and City Editor ’Furlow, of
Jpfi Times-Recorder on a run out the
■Leslie road. / „
Speqklng of Sumter’s roads, Mr.
Weldon said:
"They are decidedly the best ws
have seen. Bibb has fine roads,, but
Sumter keeps hers up rather better.
Your roads are magnificent.- Mr. Con-
nerat, who has traveled extensively,
declared he .had never anywhere driv

good as those of Sumter county.

Screven county citizens strung up
Ere.$ Roberts, a negro, to the limb of

Their act avenged the negro's at

To the fact that the negro's fren

t the failure of his attempt. The horse,
